godslabrat
The instant trashing of wireless anytime someone wants help setting up their connection isn't warranted though simply because you happened to have a negative experience. Wireless is widely used and there are many people who have great wireless service for playing games or whatever. Well, for me it's not about trashing, just advising. In having this conversation, I've often had people who were setting up computers in the same room as the router, or on the other side of a workable wall, or were otherwise GREAT candidates for wired networking. Still, they wanted to put in the time and expense to do wireless because "I don't like all those yucky WIRES! EWW!" And that's fine, if it's a decision you make knowing all the facts. However, to get good wireless service, you need to put in a decent amount of time planning and testing your setup, and so often it's just not worth the effort for the sake of saving one wire, ESPECIALLY when a wired connection can give you the fastest, most secure, and most reliable connection. Of course, I'm not discrediting your setup, I'm just saying if I can get the same result with less effort, I'm going to do it.
Video
OOPS I totally forgot I posted this Thanks for the info guys. I'd love a wired network, but as I live in a trailor now, and don't get DSL like I did at the other place, eh, it's not going to happen. Right now there are several points around the park that are open, and people just mooch off the neighbors (OK, well, I asked, cause I don't want to if they don't wantme to, but eh ) I think the shell is going to be more of a problem than anything, hey, it's metal all the way around, but eh, my cellphone works, so maybe this will to... As for playing online, maybe borderland with my friends, or something, but over all, I never got into the whole online thing, but I do like being able to download games demos to play, which is what I mostly want it for. Anyhow, yeah, now I just gotta dig out the router again and not be lazy and chunk it in the corner again like last time
hex65000
This reminds me, after reading this thread I went forth to research using DD-WRT for my home setup and wound up buying a new ASUS RT-N16 router to play with, the thing has a ton of memory, a good clock speed and works like a champ in the house. I then reflashed my 'crippled' WRT54GS v6 Linksys router to DD-WRT micro and set it up as my bridge connection from upstairs to downstairs. The only problem right now is that the link is kinda crummy. I'm tempted to play with the settings a bit more before I give up and reconsider using the Dlink unit again. It is incredibly feature rich to the point you aren't sure what needs to be on in the grand scheme of things. However, it's neat that you can actually over/underclock the broadcomm processor on the linksys and also poke at the transmit power settings and bandwidth. It was also a good excuse to upgrade my encryption to WPA2 where possible. There is also historical data you can pull from the units too. So yeah, thanks for the tip guys! Hex.
