Craziest Sega ad ever!

Recommended Posts

What can you do with your hands that makes you blind? They aren't talking about playing Virtual Boy, are they?

No... It's referring to the old wife's tale that masturbation makes you blind.

Wait...

Hold on, hold on...

That's just an old wives tale!?

You mean, like, it's not true!!?!?!

Oh my God, I have got some lost time to make up for!

I'll see you all in a couple of weeks!

There's a comedian I saw one time who explained the first time he heard of "wanking." And the other boys told him that he would go blind the 100th time he did it.

"I've never been so scared as that 100th time... it was later that afternoon..."

There's a bunch like that, some in the US too: there's the "the more you play with it the harder it gets" with the joystick image. (one of the Sega-16 users has that in their sig ;))

Plus that 32x TV commercial.

There's a bunch related to the 32x, and then the centerfold Saturn ad, of course.

As somebody who did tech support for Sega during the 32X era, I am amazed that they had a commercial which said, "Just stick it in your Genesis." This can only have heightened the level of confusion out there regarding the proper procedure for hooking up a 32X. It certainly was not as simple as just sticking it in.

They wouldn't be banned by the government, but it would've probably been rejected from magazines. We in America are supposedly Puritanical about sex, but we also produce 99% of the world's porn, so it's more like we just handle it differently. It's up to the magazine (and then the vendor).

I think the real word is *used* to be puritanical about sex. Haha, have you watched TV lately? Looked at billboard? Opened a magazine? Watched a commercial? Even Disney? Sex is everywhere. This country is not prudish about it, it is APE-ish about it. We are like chimpanzees, everything has to be full of violence, explosion, and naked chicks.. I was born in the wrong century.

Compared to most European countries though, yeah, we're extremely puritanical regarding sex & sexuality.

That ad was made and ran in the UK, what, 15-20 years ago? Can anyone really see an ad like that running in GameInformer or other US gaming mags today? We're moving in that direction, true, but we're not there yet. Far from it.

Something To Do With Your Hands

Look closely and you'll see that the price is listed in GBP. That explains it. Something this suggestive would not have been well-received in the US.

Wow, what a tasteless ad. Never expected something like that from Sega. Is that was it takes over in the UK to get peoples attention? And the funny part, is that it's not even really funny. Just something lame like a 13yr old would draw.
