Ze_ro
Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted. Oh no! Brutus has kidnapped your one and only Olive Oyl, and he's not giving her back without a fight! You'd better grab yourself a joystick and a can of spinach, because this week's game is Popeye! Game Information Game Name: Popeye Released By: Parker Bros, 1983 Left Difficulty: N/A Right Difficulty: N/A Game Mode: Default Post your scores right here in this thread, and I will add them to the list. Only one extra life can be earned. You will receive double points for collecting a note, heart, or X while the "Popeye Theme" is playing (ie, after eating the spinach) Hints and Tips The Manual As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available online. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any specific hints. We played this game once before in the High Score Club, you might want to check out that thread for more hints. Deteacher You can sort of "freeze" Bluto in his tracks for a short time. If you're on one side and you want to keep him on the other side a little longer, you can bait him to throw bottles at you. Just stand on the same level as him and wait until he starts throwing. He won't move until he throws all 3. Use that time to gather hearts/notes/x's on your side of the screen. In level 1, you can use the middle ladder to lure Bluto onto the 2nd level...just don't go all the way down the ladder. Go down all but the last step. Once he drops down and starts throwing bottles, shoot back up the ladder and resume your collecting. In level 2, you rarely have to leave the top floor. Using the "freeze Bluto" technique, you can keep going from one side to the other, collecting 500 point notes. Once you get the hang of this, the only time you'll need to drop down is to grab the spinach. In level 3, This is a lot like level 2. You should rarely ever have to leave the top level, except to get the spinach. Just keep sliding across and grab the 500 point x's. Overall, Bluto is not a very large threat. The bottles from the Seahag are the real enemy in this game. Once you learn to control Bluto, you should be able to rack up some serious points. --Zero

Scrabbler15
Got to Level 3 and really had no idea what was going on. So I ran to the spinich to make sure I got the extra 3,000 for knocking out Brutus. The spinich disappeared and Brutus was bearing down on me. My Popeye is standing there, punching the air, hoping the spinich would be back. Brutus would have whacked my last Popeye, but he stopped and jumped in the air (just in case Popeye was on two levels at the same time, I guess). It gave me just enough time to get the spinich and I got to knock out Brutus on each of the first three levels. It was all kind of comical, so to speak. 24,700 Edited November 19, 2010 by Scrabbler15
Deteacher
Ok, time for some tips: You can sort of "freeze" Bluto in his tracks for a short time. BTW, this is an excellent port of the arcade classic, IMO.

Mangia-Boy
Here is my score: 16.350 I play this game for the first time. Twice my Popeye was killed randomly without being hit by Brutus or by a flying bottle. Were these deaths caused by the seahag? How can Popeye protect himself against the seahag?
