Never found much compelling to do with the former and I still own and cherish the latter. Anytime I see Atari 8-bit games and software in stores I don’t see much that compels my interest. Although one of the local stores did have one of the computers at a cheap price so perhaps I will give it a chance and tell you if it changes my mind. If the 400 was your lone experience with the Atari 8-bit machines, then I'd highly recommend trying out another. The 400 is easily the worst of all the 8-bit models, and I think the only people who love it (I'm sure there's a few out there) are those who had it as their first computer. Personally, I'd recommend an 800XL as it's the most common system you can find, and is typically the main target for just about everything. That said, you shouldn't have much problems with any other model, especially the Tramiel-era systems like the 65XE and 130XE.
harmonyFM
I’ll keep your recommendations in mind but I’m probably just gonna get the one at the local store if I acquire one of these puppies at any point in the near future.

Do we know Nintendo did certain things deliberately so that cartridge hardware could be added later? If so, how do we know this?

You can always try it out with emulation. While there are some pretty good exclusives for the 8-bit line, I tend to agree with you that if you have a C64, you'll have most of the popular titles available. Though in some cases, the 800 version is better.
