Tempest
As we all know, most Colecovision games have four skill levels to choose from when starting a game. 1 = easy and 4 = hard, but what about 2 and 3? Which one is closer to normal or average (default?) difficulty? I never know which one to pick! Tempest

Tempest Usually, skill level 3 matches the difficulty you'd get if you were playing the arcade version of the game. That's the general rule of thumb. Skill level 2 is somewhere between beginner and arcade, something to try next when skill level 1 is just too easy for you.

youki
Usually, skill level 3 matches the difficulty you'd get if you were playing the arcade version of the game. The problem is that Arcade version difficulty change according to the setting the manager of the arcade set on the PCB. Difficulty on arcade board is set generally changing DIP switches.
newcoleco
I've tried to play many ColecoVision games at the highest difficult level and I've posted some of my lucky gameplay on Youtube. There are games that you will not pass the first level at the difficulty level 4, except if you are very quick and lucky. Games like Flipper Slipper, Looping, Roc'n Rope, River Raid, and Victory may be too difficult to be enjoyable... I had to switch to level 3 to reach and play the next levels. Tempest
I put Smurf on level 4 recently and was surprised at how hard it was. Tempest
