VicViper Posted August 2, 2011 Share Posted August 2, 2011 Are these "antique hunters" and "treasure seekers' reality shows driving any one else up the wall? they show some guy walking into a pawn shop and getting a hundred bucks for an Atari, now every one thinks there old stuff is worth thousands of dollars. Granted, the guy had a box with close to a hundred games with the Atari, but all everyone sees is Atari=100$. "boy, if the pawn shop is giving THEM a hundred for it, it must be worth THOUSANDS!!!" It's making it so the only place you can get reasonable prices is here on the forums, and forget about hunting in the wild. I'm pretty sure most of the local thrift stores put all that stuff on Ebay now, and there are at least three people on my local Craigslist trying to sell regular Ataris with a dozen R1 games for 200$ and up. I saw the episode you're talking about and its clear there are dozens of games with the Atari so if anyone tried that with me regarding a bare 2600 I'd tell them to rewatch the episode with their eyes open. A girlfriend of mine from about 10 years ago told me that her parents watched an episode of Antiques Roadshow and found out that a complete Atari 2600 system was selling for $500. I told her to tell her parents not to believe everything they hear. I don't remember them ever taking it out and I don't recall seeing which model it was but one of the guys commented that they can go for up to $250 in the box. Knowing what we do about the values of their video game finds, it kind of makes me wonder about the true "value" of all the other stuff that they find. On an episode of Storage Wars a guy found a painting in a locker. He commented that he had no idea who had painted it but that he would sell it in his shop for either $300 or $400, I can't remember which. Also, when they pull out these used sofas and say that they would go for $500 and up I am amazed. There is no way that I would ever pay $500 for a used sofa. But yea, I remember thinking they were just pulling numbers outta there asses. And yes, I thought the same thing - what else are they inflating to get ratings? I've had a little better luck in Buffalo and Syracuse, but not much. There's a couple Goodwill's on the east side of town that sometimes have 2600 carts, but they're always commons and they're always at least $4-$5 each. She even said Defender was RARE. LAWL. When I contacted her to try to talk he down, she said she had came here to AA and posted in the Market place. Someone told her the thing was worth well over $500. She came down to $300. Don't know if it sold or not... Unless they can't sell it anymore for these outrage prices, prices will go up as long as it will be sold. If it isn't standing in the way, one can hold infinitive to stuff to get the price they want. A totally working and restored machine I'd have a tough time selling for $500, one of the goofballs at Pawn Stars gave the guy double that for a busted junk example. Then, they were going to have their auto detailer paint the machine for another $2k. They were under the auspices that a Bally Odds 'n Evens is worth $5k. I used to get them at fair prices. Anymore I can't buy them for 2 times their value. Those shows are making things worse in the wild for sure, and we all know they are not on the money. These shows are also running up the prices in the local live auctions around here too. This is why I buy here and why I only buy here for the most part anymore. On the other hand I guess we could list our doubles on CL at double their price and these people thinking they are all worth a freaking ton will think they are getting a great deal.
