BillyHW
Dude, if #1 is Deadly Towers, I will hit you. Since Trojan is better than MM2, #1 must be Trojan No, it's The Adventures of Bayou Billy!
godslabrat
No, it's The Adventures of Bayou Billy! I never did understand the hate for this game. I mean, it ain't gold, but I've played way worse.
Satoshi Matrix
The kid in the video didn't look too interested in Ironsword, lol! Smart kid for ignoring IronSword for Megaman 2. IronSword sucks, and even the end label pisses me off. It just says IronSword rather than Wizards & Warriors II, so it looks wrong when you place it in between 1 and 3 on the shelf. But yeah, the whole exchange is great in his complete lack of any reaction or interest to IronSword even after his mother attempts to drum up interest. Mom: "Oh look IronSword: Wizards & Warriors 2!!!!!!!" Kid: "...........I finally got Megaman 2!!!!!!!!" Priceless.

NBC
Techmo World Wrestling raised the bar on what wrestling games could be. Pro Wrestling was real decent. WWF Supper Stars was the first WWF home game that was worth a dime besides the great arcades games they had out in the arcades. Tag Team Wrestling was not a good game but holds a special place in my hart I used to rent it alot. Gilligan's Island was a great game based off a great TV show. Bad Street Brawler was a fun game to me. Tomato Princess In The Salad Kingdom. I love that game. Gun Smoke nuff said. Ring King nuff said. Punch OUT without Mike Tyson great. The boxing game that was going to be the sequel to Punch Out great. A game I can not remember but you fought In a kick boxing ring. You punched little circles on the fighter. And did some side scrolling action as well. Got some passwords wrote down for it.But I can not remember the name of the game. I found it on the computer a while back. Another game I can not remember. You were on roller skates. you jumped holes in the pavement. Made it to a boss and kicked ass with some kick boxing. Boink the water down version. I love them games. BillyHW
Well, I have a guess at what the #1 game might be, but I'll keep it to myself. I have to say I already disagree as I feel Super Mario Bros. 3 should have been #1 regardless. Can't wait to see your review and read your case for your pick though. CGQuarterly
I thought I had a good guess for #1, as it hasn't appeared yet, but you already posted it's sequel and mentioned it as being better than the original. So I guess to you it wasn't top-100 material. Kind of surprising as to me it's one of the best NES games out there. Definitely top-10. Satoshi Matrix
Hey guys, sorry about the delay - I'm finally done! Here's the last entry in my top 100 NES/Famicom games list! Here is what I consider to be unquestionably the best game on the hardware. Thanks for everyone who has supported me through this! Rest assured, I will be doing top ## lists for other systems in the future, just probably not right away. Anyway for now, enjoy! http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2012/03/20/top-100-nesfamicom-games-list-1/
godslabrat
Absolutely fantastic read, I've been sending the link to everyone I know. I've wanted to discuss a few points on this article, but I deliberately waited until you were done. Now that you are... 1) Good move at incorporating Famicom games and Pirate originals into the mixture. I think that was appropriate for this type of list, which is less of a "best of" and more of a "what games mattered most" collection. 2) You're obviously a huge MegaMan fan, and I can't begrudge you a bias... but having all six games make the list? You feel that strongly about each one? 3) Star Trek: TNG gets a mention, but no love for Battletoads or Dragon Warrior (I'm a huge Trekkie, but I'm not sure about this one...) 4) The entry for Final Fantasy is incomplete without a mention of http://www.nuklearpower.com 5) Thank you for not needlessly retreading the "How SMB2 USA came to be" story, you were correct to think that it's been done to death. Likewise, I appreciate that you didn't dismiss it as "not a true Mario game". And lastly, just because I'm fascinated by the process it took to make up this list, I have to wonder what games you would personally like to have entered into the list, but chose not to.
Satoshi Matrix
1. The list is honestly the games that I like - nothing more, nothing less. There are a lot of popular games I didn't mention at all on purpose because either I don't like them or don't like them enough to warrant them on the top 100. 2. I completely do feel that all six Megaman games deserve places on the top 100 NES games. They're ALL really polished games and even though the later games were stigma of "same old same old" they are in fact excellent games that are superior to many of their 16-bit rivals at the time. I love Megaman, but you didn't see me put RockBoard on the list. RockBoard is not great even though I do like it. 3. TNG gets the pass, but 25th anniversary didn't, even though I love TOS more than TNG. No love for Dragon Warrior is correct, but Battletoads is alrigtht..just not top 100 material for me I'm afraid. 4. Uh..okay? 5. Yeah.......SMB2J and SMB2 USA both are good games, but they're so different from each other I prefer to always refer to the Japanese version with a J and the one that came out for the NES and Mario USA as it was called in Japan. 6. Dozens and dozens at least, probably closer to 300 games. I really went over the NES, Famicom and FDS library to create this list. There was a LOT that ended up on the cutting room floor. I think I might do a more brief list of an additional 100 games just based on the extra that didn't make the top 100. Maybe do something like "`100 honorable mentions" or something. Of course, even then I'll have to cut out some games I like for the sake of the list.
atarilovesyou
I didn't even realize that Battletoads wasn't on the list!...lol, oh well, to each his own...even though to me, it's top five for sure. I haven't tried Mr Gimmick (that's what I call it, 'Gimmick' just sounds a bit odd to me, lol) but I hope I can play in on my powerpak when it arrives. I'm not a huge platformer fan, but from what I've seen about Mr Gimmick is good. Mr Matrix?...thanks for a great list and lots of entertainment! It's gotten me to try a lot of games (and even pick up some retroware stuff). Looking forward to your new stuff!
BillyHW
Action 52...groan. At first I thought you were making some sort of commentary on the plethora of bad NES games. I'll definitely have to give Gimmick a try on emulator. There are quite a few games on your list that I'm excited to try. Right now I've started on Mega Man 2. I'm not quite sure I'm a fan of these extra sound chips though, they make these games sound C64-ish, which is a great sound in its own right, but I prefer the clean NES sound. Notable exclusions from your list are Dragon Warrior, Battletoads, R.C. Pro-Am and Donkey Kong. There are also a lack of sports titles. I agree that Dragon Warrior is an overrated game, but it's like the Doom of JRPGs, at least on the Famicom, so it still matters. I really don't understand the hate for Battletoads on the net, it was one of the best NES games of all time for sure. As an NES title in 1986, Donkey Kong was not a big deal, but as a launch title for the Famicom in 1983, it was surely a really important release in Japan. I don't think they had the Colecovision in Japan, am I right? So in the Japanese market it would have been the defining home port. By the way, Satoshi, what country are you from? Anyhow, spectacular list, and I can't wait to go through some of these games. I would really like to see a similar top 100 (or top 50 since there are fewer) Sega Master System titles. Not sure how into the SMS you are. I had the NES myself when I was a kid, but my cousin had Sega, so I know there are some truly great games for that system. And there are probably a bunch of European releases that never saw the light of day over here in N.A. It would be good to get the word out about them.
Satoshi Matrix
Actually, The Famicom launched with Popeye, not Donkey Kong. I'm Canadian. SMS list would be a bit more tricky, but I should be able to do something like that in the future. Unfortunately, I don't own a Master System myself, and am only really familiar with it in emulation, and I don't really have all that strong a grasp on its library. Before I do such a list, I'm going to tackle systems I DO know well such as the GBA, SNES, Original Xbox and GameCube. I think the next list I'll do will be Xbox games. BillyHW
Hey, I'm Canadian too. Wiki says that Famicom launch titles were Popeye, Donkey Kong and DK Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_launch_games) Do you have any other good posts in your blog archive that are worth reading? Satoshi Matrix
Hey guys, really just as an experiment, I decided to put all of the parts in the top 100 NES/Famicom games list I've been working on for the past few months into a single post to see if wordpress would even be able to handle it. I need to make sure it works lol word of warning: this post contains over 53,000 words, somewhere around 500 images, and about 100 embedded youtube links. I do NOT recommend it viewed on mobile devices. I've gone back through it and corrected errors as I saw them, but I probably missed some. If you spot mistakes, let me know so I can fix them! http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2012/03/23/top-100-nesfamicom-games-list-all-in-one/
