So I finally got a Spectre GCR (I had the Spectre cart previously).

Ive had trouble getting software transferred and didnt have any Mac disks - anyone have a suggestion/site to get Mac software? Id like to get the lastest System/Finder that worked with the Spectre series.

I dont suppose there is a way to generate 800k mac disks from a PC?

Apple has a few bits of system software you can snag up, http://download.info...m/System_6.0.x/ dont know if its just the update or the system software itself, but i do know that they do have the install disk images of some versions.

Sorry, but by itself there is no way that a standard PC floppy drive can write or generate a Mac 800k disk, the hardware of the drive itself makes it to where it can not. There are adapters that might make it to where you can read and write data in the Mac 800k format like http://www.kryoflux.com/, http://www.discferre...wiki/DiscFerret, http://www.icomp.de/home/indexe.htm, and maybe even http://www.shlock.co...op/OmniFlop.htm the above links is the only likely way of writing a Mac 800k disk on a PC drive short of buying a older Mac that has a superdrive in it.

Yeah - Im so close but now running into - All HFS disks works....except 800k ones with the PC. I dont presume anyone figured out how to network an ST and a Spectre Mac?

I have no luck with the Transformer program - any .SIT file gets corrupted :(

Well I may have figured out a work around. I found that I could use an older version of 'pkzip' to turn the .SEA or .SIT file into a zip file that the Transfer program can handle. I use Unary as the Type and the used ResEdit to add a default Resource fork for it and then Stuffit 4.x will handle the Zip file at which point I have a good .SIT file.

Now my next problem - I had a few old games that are in .DSK and .IMG format. I thought with Disk Copy I could turn these into floppies.........well that didnt turn out to be 100% correct . Turns out these are for emulators only...............so anyone know of any site with old Mac programs that are not in .DSK format?

Also - The 800k System 6.0.8 images that Apple provided dont work on an 800k disk............it gets almost to the end and tells me there is not enough disk space on the floppy!

That's weird, I could've sworn I've written Apple's 800k images to disk before. Maybe I'm mistaken, though. I'll have to try again sometime soon.

Im sure it works - but for some reason the System 6.0.8 file wont write :( - or are you talking about the .DSK images? .DSK images are just raw disk images so in theory you could write them out - however I dont have anything that runs under System 6.0.5 that can do it?

Nah, I'm talking about the .sea.bin files on Apple's site.

I tried a couple of times today with no luck - seems I need to use DiskCopy to write the .sea files out but for some reason it gets an 'Error 17' when writing to the floppy - it happens right away like there is some issue with DiskCopy and the floppy drive. I have DiskCopy 4.2 loaded.

Stuffit expander http://main.system7t...es/75x_68k.html will handle .bin files. and a .SEA should not require any extra software (self extracting archive) double clicking should extract everything , Did you try doing everything within a 68k emulator (running system 7 in Basilisk II or Mini vMac) for the PC and working from that ? you should be able to format a disk to 720kb which is able to be used in a Atari ST http://www.atari-for...pic.php?p=90731 and somehow copy the files to the disk and xfer the data piece by piece over to the Atari. I am just shooting in the dark here, never had a Atari ST nor the Spectre GCR. its been a while for me since i have messed around in the classic Mac OS so its sort of trial and error unless someone with prior experience in doing this.

Thanks - the page you linked has utilities that only work under System 7 :( - Stuffit 5.5 has some pretty big requirements also - seemed it need 8mb of RAM :o

For some reason I cant open .bin files. I have Stuffit Lite 4 and Stuffit expander 4.0.1 - they handle .SEA, .HQX, and .SIT files - but not .bin

I got Guantlet working though :)

I didnt get too far with the Mac emulators - can they write information out to a floppy disk in PC mode?

I think they can read from medium but dunno if they can write directly to the medium, i know that all of the files get put in a folder that you can take out and put on a disk yourself (but you have to watch out for the resource fork). Yeah i know that software is for system 7, the reason i pointed there is to run system 7 or greater in a emulator to work with the files instead of trying to work with them directly in windows (its a PITA to work with older Mac files in windows due to the resource fork getting screwed every time).

I don't really mess around in 68k emulators due to the fact i have a Performa 475 to work with files like this. It might be a different story working in a emulator on a different platform then actual hardware.

Perhaps BinHex will let you decompress those files???

http://macintoshgard.../apps/binhex-50

desiv

I think this would work - unfort its compressed in a newer version of SIT and also are disk images inside which I cant use :( - Everytime I get a step closer I run into a roadblock!

Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone!

I do hate a catch 22, You just might have to look for a online shop that sells the disks. and i have one for you that does. just go to http://resale.headgap.com/ and and click on enter store then go to software and scroll way down, they have Mac OS system 6.0.8 on HD 1.4 disks for $9.77. and further down they have system 6.0.8 on 800k disks for $12.77. this might be the only way to get out of the catch 22 you are in short of buying a real 68k.

I have bought many things from them (pram batteries, software, and hardware). Good luck
