My Collection. Looking for tips to get more!

Hello I'm fairly new to the collecting process of retro games (approximately 1 year) and I'm finding that my interest in retro games is growing manipulatively while my funds aren't growing at all =P So I was just wondering how everyone else comes across their AWESOME finds. Right now I buy quite a bit off ebay and a few good gamestores around the area. The problem is I buy the gamestore's stock faster than they get retro stuff in (which isn't very fast at all) and ebay can get quite pricey. Any tips? Garage sales? Auctions maybe?

On another side note I'm a Computer Science major and I'm really getting into the programming aspect, which I really love so I was wondering if anyone had any good tips on what to get for a classic computer (just to mess around with a bit) and maybe some advice on programming the 2600.

My Collection as of right now (no pics atm but I will add some later =])

Intellivision (I and II)

Sega Genesis

Gameboy DMG

Gameboy Color - Teal

4 NES - also roughly 150 games and about 20 games boxed. Also got the Rob with gyromite and the Laserscope

2 Atari 2600 - One Woody and one black both 4 switch systems.

Magnavox Odyssey- GREAT FUN!

N64

SNES

Dreamcast

Sega Gamegear - blue

I have about 10-50 games for each of the consoles above.

Any tips on what to get next? Lately been really into atari and thinking about getting the atari lynx next =]

Btw I looked at a lot of the other people's collections from this site and I got to admit you guys are pros! Very nice collections.

I've been actively collecting 8-bit era stuff since the beginning of the summer, and I would have to say that your next purchase should be a Vectrex. A ton of fun and a unique addition to any collection. It can get pricey fast, though. You'll hear different opinions about the overlays, but I think they're great and make the Vectrex resemble the glass on arcade cabs.

Vectrex huh? I've surprisingly never heard of it before I read about it on these forums! It sounds pretty interesting. I will definitely check it out tonight! I'm starting to dabble in atari 2600 programming tonight and I have to admit its pretty amazing stuff. Well off to ebay! haha

Just Checked it out! That thing looks insane!

welcome aboard!! and to pretty much the never ending game collecting!! I guess if you don't have alot of money which alot of us don't you need to do alot of leg work.. yard sales and flea markets pretty much. When I first started getting serious about collecting about 15 years ago for about 7 years straight every weekend I was out the door by 5:30am and at the flea market with a flashlight!! The finds are still out there you just gotta find them!!!!

If you are looking seriously at Vectrex, make sure the seller says that it has been tested and is fully functional. The vector display can go bad in many different ways. The sound can not work. And the controller may be busted, especially the joystick not centering.

Bonuses are the Minestorm overlay, manuals, and the original box.

I'd say that a fair price for a fully functional, barebones Vectrex without any of the bonuses is $100 before shipping. If you can get any of the bonuses (especially the box) for around $10 more, go for it. Most loose games are worth about $5 apiece.
