Godzilla
Played Star Ship again last nite, so I could write a good review for Atari Today. He offered to replace his review with mine, so as soon as I have the time to spit it out... I failed to mention a THIRD game in Star Ship, Warp Drive, where you control your speed (with a neat sfx for your different speeds,) and try to go as far as possible (in parsecs,) as you can in 2.16 minutes.) Warp Drive is ALSO a fun game. It's the only game that doesn't have a two player mode tho. Am I the only one who really liked having many games in one cartridge (street racer was really good with variety too,) Star Ship has: Star Ship, the 2 player 'shoot the module game', one/2 player simul Lunar Lander game, and The Warp Drive game. All of which are actually different games. Not bad for an ol primitive small game. It's definately something that modern games do not have, lots of actual different games (and compilations dont count,)
Godzilla
well i wrote the review for atari today. lets see if they put it up
Rob Mitchell
Well I hacked Star Ship with Hack-O-Matic to change some of the objects. Now the asteroids (collection of yellow blocks) is now one big Asteroid. The space alien is now a landing spacecraft. And the cheezy "moon" in Lunar Lander is now one solid moon. I call it Space Ship (for lack of a better name). Dang if I cannot get it uploaded to Atariage .. Why is it so hard to get stuff uploaded here? Doc4
I posted the review but decided to leave mine up since I had so much support inthis forum. Though if any of you have more opinions of other reviews I am more than willing to post them, this is by no means a one sided website, I welcome other peoples thoughts and ideas. I appreciate the review from Godzilla, and look forward to any others from the people in this forum. Please note the website is AtariCart not AtariToday I would hate for Matthew over at AtariToday to get mad at me for people knocking a review that didn't even reside on his site. Thanks Dale AtariCart.com
Godzilla
Oops, sorry. That would be my mistake :-) On a freaky note, I got an old busted .br pir8 cart that was promised to me a trade AGES ago in the mail yesterday, a nameless, endlabelless homevision cart, and it's a pir8 of Star Ship! What are the odds, eh??
Doc4
Thats crazy, there must be a ton of repackaged Star Ships out there, we already have three anyone else have some other Star Ship clone floating around (no pun intended)
Room 34
I am curious if anyone knows the real story behind the weird labels on the official Atari re-release of the game... the ones that are black with "STAR SHIP" in oversized yellow text, and the circa-1982 "ATARI 2600" logo on the main label. Why did Atari make this label instead of a regular picture label? And the bigger question... WHY did they re-release the game at all? Godzilla
Esecially since it was one of the first games Atari pulled from it's catalog voluntarily, and mini golf. I remember a little section in Eletornic Games magazine long ago about Mini Golf and Star Ship being the first collectible atari cartridges, they had an illustration of a mock antique shop with Star Ship and Mini Golf in the display window :-) Probably the first print reference to Atari 2600 carts being collectible :-)
Room 34
Mini Golf and Star Ship I guess I really am a "collector" after all, because I have both, acquired just within the last year. In fact, I own two copies of Star Ship, including the weird label re-release version. But still, WHY was it rereleased? And why not Miniature Golf with it? Godzilla
I own every u.s. label variation of star ship (including the sears variations,) (and now an intl variation too! :-)
Thomas Jentzsch
Dang if I cannot get it uploaded to Atariage .. Why is it so hard to get stuff uploaded here? AA doesn't accept every file format, so you better Zip it before uploading.
Rob Mitchell
Ok .. today is the first time I have seriously played Star Ship in 25 years .. Game 1: Skill level B: Score 39; One crash Game 1: Skill level A: Score 36; No crash. Funny how you can fire and THEN steer the enemy into your fire to score. Kinda like guided photons Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
Rob Mitchell
Tried Again: Game 1, A difficulty, Score 43, no crashes. Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
Godzilla
yea that can be a big part of startegy relating to whether its worth risking a collision. ill have to have some more gos at at it and record scores, now that im a little warmed up
Flojomojo
Heheheh ... "bump" Wouldn't it be neat to have a sophisticated emulator -- or simulator would probably be easier-- that could train you to play wacky games like this without reading the manual? It would be so much more accessible with an online tutorial ... and better graphics ...
Godzilla
nah chunky pixel games just help teach you proper appreciation for the later 2600 games' gfx :-)
