Torr
Does anyone know why in the Mortal Kombat series Raiden was spelled with an I in all the arcade games but then when each game was ported to the home consoles his name was always Rayden with a Y? That's perplexed me since 1993....
goldenegg
From wikipedia: The console ports released up until Mortal Kombat 4, along with both movies and the comic book series, changed the name to "Rayden". According to Ed Boon, he spelled it that way to avoid confusion with the Fatal Fury character Raiden. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiden_(Mortal_Kombat)
Torr
Really? Considering Fatal Fury came out before MK (at least I'm pretty sure it did) why didn't they spell Raiden with a Y in the arcade versions to help differentiate? And even if Fatal Fury came out AFTER MK then Midway could claim SNK was copying THEIR character's name. , not the other way around... still makes no sense to me.... goldenegg
Maybe Fatal Fury had a strong following on home consoles at the time, prompting the name change. Fact is, it doesn't really need to make sense to us. It made sense to someone at the time.
Arkhan
It's a dumbass white person screwing up an Asian name. That's all. Raiden is pronounced "Rye Den" not "Ray Den". If they wanted that they should have made the name Reiden. It's like all those people that say "Ninja Gayden". its "Guy Den" whoa, what's funny about that is either way, it sounds gay. a den of gays, or a den of guys, hmmm. MagitekAngel
I would hope that nobody enjoys Mortal Kombat because they consider it to be a serious and culturally authentic piece of literature. For all I know, the creation deities in their mythology are Izzynagi and IzzyNOMNOMi.
The Usotsuki
Well, he WAS named for the Japanese thunder god Raiden/Raijin. There was an arcade game came out some time before that called Raiden and it might just have been a licensing thing so long as Midway themselves weren't managing the home ports (as they did for 3+).
