RickR
I just inherited a 4-port 5200 that has everything EXCEPT the switch box. Does anyone have an extra they would like to sell, or know of a source for a decent price? The thing is, I don't want to spend a fortune because I have no idea if the 5200 even works. Or the controllers could be shot. I'm hoping some kind soul will help me get my 5200 collection started. Thanks. yell0w_lantern
I have a homemade one I'll send you free. I did the power mod so I don't need it anymore.

How is that power mod you did, I have been thinking about getting one done ? Do you have composite also ?
yell0w_lantern
The Power mod is pretty good. It's a good enough video improvement for me that I decided not to do the composite mod. Then again, I was using a homemade switchbox and cannot make a comparison to the official Atari ones. shadow460
The power mod rocks. It's the absolute best thing you can do for a 4 port besides getting better controllers.
RickR
I've been thinking about doing the power mod, but I'm afraid of ruining the 5200.

RickR
How hard/risky is the power mod?
Charlie_
How hard/risky is the power mod? It is not very hard. The hardest part is removing the existing, large capacitor from the board. A solder gun and solder sucker is what I used. Sent from my Windows Phone 8X by HTC using Board Express
jmetal88
I actually like having the switch box on my 4-port. Frankly, it provides some of the clearest RF I've ever gotten from a console. Also, it means I don't have to have two cables running to my Atari 5200, which is kind of neat.

I was hoping to just clip the lead but that sucker is right up against the board so you have to go at it from under the board. I heated up the 3 solder joint round-robin while pulling on the cap. That got it out eventually.
shadow460
IMHO, a desoldering tool is required for anyone who's gonna hard mod a console, period. It's impossible to remove ICs without one. Additionally, it let's you get 30 year old solder off the board wile you're modding. I'm not trying to bash anyone here; this tool really makes modding a lot easier! BigO
Not too expensive, but quite effective. If you're looking for sophisticated temperature control or ESD safe, this ain't it. But, I have used one like this (or at least very similar) for a long time with a lot of success. The one I have is available a lot of places, but I can't think of where I got mine at the moment. http://www.web-tronics.com/zd-211.html [edit] This looks to be exactly the one I have: http://www.elexp.com/sdr_0848.htm http://www.rapidonli...ing-tool-30314/ http://www.xytronic-....aspx?itemid=53 http://www.listware....ering-tool.html I could probably post links ad nauseum, but I think you get the point of how generic and widely available it is. RickR
I was only familiar with the kind that sucks only, meaning you heat with a separate soldering iron, then suck with the tool. I always mess it up since I'm no good using both hands at the same time (it makes me wish for a third hand). Yours is a much better design, and I'll go look for one of those now. Thanks for teaching me something new!
