Innovative Leisure
I was reading an issue of ST Format magazine (Issue 17, December, 1990) and came across an article announcing a Transputer expansion unit dubbed the STT. The specs outlined are... CPU Speed: 15-20 MIPs Palette: 16 million colo(u)rs Price: £300-400 Availability: September, 1991 How far along did this product get in development before it was canceled? ParanoidLittleMan
Yeah - and much less powerful Falcon was launched in 1992, for some 2800 DEM ???
+DarkLord
The Transputer was actually released. You can read about it in various places. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/199774-atari-atw800-transputer-first-boot-attempt/ http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/197988-atari-atw800-video-question/ HTHs. MrMaddog
That was the ATW Transputer. I've read in Antic it would have been released in two models, a standalone with the Mega ST board inside and another one where you connect an existing Mega ST to it. In other words you use the ST as a terminal for it.
+DarkLord
Not sure about the 2nd one then. Hadn't heard of it. Be interesting to find out if it ever was released!
Zogging Hell
Wasn't there a add on from someone like Power Computing (or a similar UK/ Eurpean supplier)? I think the idea behind it was it would be like the ARM chip for the BBC micro, i.e. would allow ST developers to gently break themselves into it before Transputers took over from STs.. Not quite sure where it never went anywhere..
ilaskey
See here "Oh, do you know that Atari UK is developing a new add-on for STF/STE based on a transputer T800. This add-on known as STT would be avail- able in Europe at the end of 1991 and would have some amazing graphic capacities. The price would be around 850 $ (US)." ilaskey
Also found this "Um, there are rumors abound about an ATW adon board for the VME equiped ST's (ie. Mega STe and TT) according to ST Format this board is basically the transputer part of an ATW complete with its RISC based very high res colour graphics processor and a number of T800 transputers. I believe the board is being worked on by Atari UK and perehelion. According to ST Format the price could be very reasonable to."
+DarkLord
Interesting tidbits, thanks guys. Sure wish there was some pictures, if the project even got as far as actual hardware...
ParanoidLittleMan
I remember some writings about it in magazines in that time. It certainly reached some working stage. And for sure was not sold in some quantity. Just another project with good intention which failed. This is capitalism
oky2000
I knew about the Abaq/ATW (Atari Transputer Workstation) but not a standalone Mega ST style machine with a single transputer. There was also a rumour that C= were interested in the chip (may have been an issue of ACE, I recently bought all 55 issues complete and been flicking through them) but that's probably just counter maneuver in case the Atari machines took off. oky2000
I also had a go on a blitter enhanced ST and had a quick go on PC-Engine/Turbografx R-Type with Julian Rignall without press passes over the years
