Got a new to me 1040ST and hard dirves, now what?

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a 1040ST and a couple of different hard drives. Now what? I have a hard drive for the Amiga 500, does the 1040ST hard drives work similar in that I can load that puppy up with software and go to town? If so, is there a program I can use to access the data on a PC with SCSI adapter or a Mac? I am lost.

do you have a ACSI to SCSI host adaptor for your ST? You need the HDDRIVER software or ICDTOOLS to mount the HD. With HDDRIVER you can format the drive with FAT to be able to read it on a PC. You can use a Zip 100 drive and it works great! Then you can transfer ST software over. But most software is in ST or MSA format so you will just need to transfer it to a real 720k disk and go that route! You can do that on a PC very easily! Use Google or search on here for more details.

I would check out the PP driver - it's worth asking ParanoidLittleMan if his driver will support your drives before you buy it. Then you can get games from his website, or the dbug site.

PP driver:- http://atari.8bitchip.info/pphdr.php

PP hard disk installed (and adapted games), just like whdload games etc.:-

And if you want a nice easy way to get games to and from your ST, and more reliable storage with more space, take a look at Lothareks new UltraSatans:-

Using PP driver you can easily take the SD card out of the drive and read and write to C: using a PC. hddriver will probably do the same job but it's more expensive. Still worth checking out.

EDIT: Or there's a floppy emulator you can replace your floppy drive with - that takes SD cards as well and is easy to use to get files to and from the ST.
