problems seeing atari 2600 cartridge photos in rarity guide

this probably has nothing to do with atariage, but more likely my browser...

for some reason on my home pc, i can no longer see pictures of atari 2600 cartridges. i can see the boxes, screenshots, instructions fine and i can see cart pictures for other systems here, but i always see the [x can't load image] thing for atari 2600 cartridges:

http://www.atariage.com/cart_page.html?Sof...wareLabelID=400

this is using internet explorer and windows me. reloading the page or right-clicking the image doesn't help. anyone have suggestions?

actually, i sat down one night and increased the SoftwareLabelId= value until i could see a photo, but don't recall right now what that number was.

thanks

i'm guessing it has something to do with cache also, but i don't know how to correct this. i know i've been able to see these pictures at home in the past. and i have no problems seeing them with IE on a win2000 machine. i think i've deleted "all temporary internte files" also with no effect.

ok, i can see the png file. i can see this picture:

http://www.atariage.com/cart_page.html?Sof...wareLabelID=607

but i cannot see this one:

http://www.atariage.com/cart_page.html?Sof...wareLabelID=606

so 1-606 are not visible, but everything above 606 is visible. i also notice that i can go directly to the 607 .jpg and view it:

http://www.atariage.com/5200/carts/c_Astro...chase_front.jpg

but i cannot view zaxxon for 606:

http://www.atariage.com/2600/carts/c_Zaxxon_front.jpg

i get the screen of death:

www.atariage.com Error 403: Access Forbidden

also, the file type for astrochase is known: JPG file

but the file type for zaxxon is not known: Not available

now i'm wondering if there is a subtle file permission difference between the atari 2600 cart directory for photos and the 5200 directory. i can see the boxes just fine. maybe explorer just doesn't know how to deal with the "Not available" file type in the /2600/carts subdirectory.

i can see 5200, 7800, lynx cart labels, but no cart labels in the 2600 directory.

Thanks for trying a few different browsers. I took a look through the directory where those files are stored and don't see anything unusual as far as file permissions go. The directory permissions all seem fine also. You are the first person to note this particular problem, and it's pretty damn unusual. It's also strange that you're getting an "Access Forbidden" message. You're not using an IP address we're denying access to, and this is the message you'd be seeing if we were.

What ISP are you using? Is there some way you can try connecting using a different ISP to see if you get the same results?

sorry, some of that description wasn't exact. when i pick the link to see an atari 2600 cartridge label, the web page displays correctly, but where the main label and end label images should be, i see

[x] Combat - Cartridge Scan

[x] Combat - Cartridge Scan

which if i look at the html source, is what you are supposed to display if you can't display the picture (i guess, i don't know html that well):

<img src="/2600/carts/c_Combat_Picture_end.jpg" alt="Combat - Cartridge Scan">

if i try to pull up the following url:

http://www.atariage.com/2600/carts/c_Comba...cture_front.jpg

i get the access forbidden page.

that is the scenario if i do this from home on my WinMe system connected via RoadRunner cable modem.

from work on a Win2000 machine, everything works fine. i guess i could take my Win2000 laptop home and see if i get the same problem connected through RoadRunner.

at work, if i look at the properties of the combat image, it tells me

Type: JPEG image

however, from home (WinMe), all 2600 carts' .jpg files have the property:

Type: not available

all 2600 boxes and 5200 carts show:

Type: JPG image

i'll double check those last two from home.

i tried my win2000 laptop from home and had no problem seeing all the atari 2600 cart pictures. the problem seems to be a combination of the particulary directory (/2600/carts/* fails, /5200/carts/* works) and the OS i'm using (Win2000 works on all directories, WinMe only works on some directories). all browsers have the same problem or same success based on what machine they are tried on. the fact that i can see all the .jpgs on /5200/carts makes me think there must be something different about either the disk drive, partition, permissions on the directory/folder, or default permissions on the individual files in the /2600/carts directory.

albert, could you try this? copy the following .jpg:

http://www.atariage.com/2600/carts/c_Comba...cture_front.jpg

to the /5200/carts/ folder and i'll see if i can view it in that folder. then copy a 5200 picture:

http://www.atariage.com/5200/carts/c_Centi...ipede_front.jpg

to the /2600/carts/ folder and i'll see if that is visible.

PM me if you'd like or post here when the files have been copied.

thanks,tony

i can now see this picture fine:

http://www.atariage.com/5200/carts/c_Comba...cture_front.jpg

this link gives the access forbidden error:

http://www.atariage.com/2600/carts/c_Centi...ipede_front.jpg

www.atariage.com Error 403: Access Forbidden

You do not have permission to access this page. If you feel you have received this message in error, please contact the webmaster: admin@atariage.com.

so i can view the combat picture when it is in the 5200 directory but not when it sits in the 2600 directory

This also happens to me (now with Opera 6.05).

this is very wierd, the only pics I cannot see here, like everyone else, is the atari 2600 pics... and the timing is odd too... this happened just a few weeks ago after I put up some redrawn activision cart scans for Albert to add to the archive... I swear I did not virus them :D I've been thinking maybe a bad link or typo somewhere when they might have been added, as it almost happened to the day and I have not changed anything here... that I know of anyhow ;) they were all working fine for me before that.

the coincidence seems too great.

This actually probably corresponded with some server upgrades we did a few weeks ago. Among those upgrades was a newer version of Apache, and it's possible that the Apache configuration was changed in ways we did not intend. We'll investigate and try to figure out what the heck happened and fix it.. Thanks everyone for all the information, and we'll let you know when we think we have it licked..

The 2600 carts dir had an Apache rewrite rule to prevent hot linking. Why that would behave differently with different OS's makes no sense to me, as it's basically just checking for the referrer ID and making sure it's AtariAge. Very strange.
