qberticus
Has anyone tried using one of these adapters with the MyIDE? Looks like it would be great for an internal installation. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=11157
Goochman
For $10 I almost want to buy it - but then again Ive got too many other things going on
Thelen
I have been thinking about this too. A compact flash cart can work in various modes, and one of them is a real IDE mode. It would be great to have 512 Mb CF inside.....But wil it work ? Has anyone tested some other IDE media beside a harddisk ? a zip drive ? AtariGuy
We shall soon find out... If it doesn't work, i can always build a windows ce desktop out of the spare parts i have laying around.
Shawn Jefferson
I believe that a CF card needs an interface that works in true ATAPI mode and the MyIDE doesn't AFAIK.
Shawn Jefferson
I believe that a CF card needs an interface that works in true ATAPI mode (which means 16-bit access) and the MyIDE doesn't AFAIK. Double post! Why do I always hit when I want [edit] ? Mods delete my previous message (why can't we delete our own messages?) Annoying. AtariGuy
You're probably right, but I've been looking for one of these anyway. Besides, if it does work, that saves me from buying more 2.5" drives, since the 3 I have don't seem to work with MyIDE....
Wrathchild
I've thought of trying to make a small PIC micro based board that hooks up via the SPI bus to a MultiMedia or SD Card as a friend has a 16Meg card going begging. Are there any other projects on these types of cards? Mark
AtariGuy
The CF to IDE adaptor arrived today, and here's what I found: I plugged it in to the MyIDE along with a 64MB CF card I had. I boot the Atari and run scandisk...it recognizes a drive as being attached, and passed the scan...no problems. I then run fdisk, and again, it detects the drive. I set up a 16 MB partition, and go into MyDOS to set it up. It recognized a high-capicity drive on drive 2. So I initialize it, do a disk directory, and it shows free sectors! I then write DOS files to it, and they write. I then run fdisk again, set up the partition as drive 1, and boot directly to the partition on CF! So I've decided to build the CF adaptor into my 800XL...it's smaller and will use less power than a hard drive. And I can cut a slot in the back to change CF cards as needed. PFonck
Wow! Sounds great! Especially if it ends my 2,5" drive trouble. CompactFlash is not so expensive anymore especially because 16 or 32MB is more than enough to load some games onto the 8-bit :-)
Draugr
Has anyone thought of creating a 8-Bit mega-cartridge that would have a slot on the top where a user could enter a CF card. Then plug the Atari 8-bit cart into the cart slot and then add games to it and have them saved to the CF card inside the special cart. This would be great as you could stick a 256mb cf card into the cartridge spine and then place the cart into the 8-bit system and then store many games on it for immediate loading like typical carts on an Atari 8-Bit. Does this sound like a possibility?
bobwoolley
Yes, it is possible. The problem is the code to run the CF load, not the hardware. Maybe we can load cartridge memory from the CF card (as well as RAM memory). The hard part is emulating a disk drive - you need PBI to do that well.
