Yes ,running it in a damaged state can lessen the time available to recover data. it's probably not a happy drive. You have to weigh that against the cost of professional drive recovery services.

You may get "lucky" and it runs "alright". Again, it's still no longer a happy drive. I'd expect it to fail sooner rather then later - and usually when you make the mistake of trusting it again.

Maybe try giving it a very gentle shake, or just turn it over in your hands, before trying to power it up. If anything rattles, proceed with caution. I dropped an iPod drive once, and afterward it sounded like a box of Cracker Jacks. Needless to say, it didn't work.

I shook it and didn't hear anything rattling. I hooked up my old-school telephone pickup coil and flipped the disk radially and listened for thumps from the motor. I heard several, that indicated the motor and platters were freewheeling.

So I powered it up and it seemed to operate normally. I dumped the data to another disk. This disk is/was a collection of backups of other systems. While important, it would've taken time to recreate everything. Next step is to simulate or verify the backup images' checksums.

Gotta love these lo-tech devices from the 1970's. They're great electronic stethoscopes for basic troubleshooting!
