Complete 2nd set of overlays?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone pursued trying to accumulate a complete second set of overlays for the games that had them? It's a goal that's been in the back of my mind for years, but not anything I've ever pursued. The idea would be to have a set that is as pristine as possible (the "collector" set) and then a second set to actually use when playing the game.

I don't feel this need with boxes or manuals - I can usually keep those in good shape even when using them semi-regularly. But we all know that the overlays can definitely show wear-and-tear when used a lot.

Maybe it makes sense to pursue a second set of overlays for the top 25% of games that get a lot of gameplay, and then see where things go from there.

I stopped using the overlays long, long ago. Sadly, my siblings did not. But the answer to your dilemma is simple. If you play the variants game, not only will you quickly build a second set, but it will likely also contain overlay variations! In fact, I think that was the vector upon which my affliction attacked. :P

Not a complete set (never complete! ), but here is some overlay porn for ya. Enjoy!

Oops, first some background. I took a slightly different approach from Rick. My best set of overlays always goes with my best copy of my game, which I essentially never play (I have enough duplicates, I rarely need to play my collector copy of any game). Regarding overlays, I usually don't use them. For games like MLB, AD&D, Utopia, etc. I either memorize the buttons, keep the overlay nearby for reference, or use a worn one. Most of those are cheap enough that I can afford to "ruin" an AD&D overlay from time to time, but not my best ones. My second best overlays used to go with my second best copies of a game, but I have been upgrading my overlay collection since I will likely keep the overlay collection longer than second copies of games. The overlay collection is completely separate from the CIB copies of games that I own. It's meant to be a stand alone collection/reference guide, sort of. I use a 3 ring folder and place the overlays in clear plastic baseball card pages (available at most gaming/comic stores for around $0.20 per page. I think they were like 5 for $1. Prob dirt cheap on Amazon). I'm still organizing them, but they are pretty much alphabetical by manufacturer (Mattel, Activision, Imagic, Intellivision Inc, Homebrew, Orphans, etc). OK, enough with the bla bla bla.....here be the goodies:

Orphans & extra commons stack

The stack in the picture above is my "extras" pile. Not that I'm not an overlay junkie, but many of those will eventually be paired up with the numerous loose carts/manuals that I have when it comes time to trade/sell.
It that pile looks cool and you want to experience a taste of that overlay sweetness yourself, fear not as there is an even larger pile in the grab bag (which I'm wrapping up now....sorry it's taking so long). The pile on the left is what arrived in the grab bag :-o They are all alphabetized :-D Three cheers for Alf for keeping an eye on them for me :rolling:

nitpicker alert: I guess you also have ABPA Backgammon overlays in this stack :P

Good observation! **jason frantically runs to collection to verify inventory**

My primary Backgammon copy (USA version, box has keyboard component reference and white serial # atop, full color manual, heavy shielded cart without the "insert to this line").....has the ABPA overlay versions, but that's my only pair of those. I have 2 other USA CIB copies, both of which have the generic "Backgammon" overlays. My Hong Kong copy is missing overlays. My Sears copy has the generic "Backgammon" overlays. My Intellivision Inc copy....awww (Jason forgets that he doesn't have this) :_( I'll have to add a set of those to my overlay wishlist :-D

There are no Backgammon overlays in the stack, BTW

What do you need Rick?

Oh, I'm not actively starting this as a project (yet). I was just thinking about it while playing Microsurgeon the other day. I only have one set for that one and they are in pretty nice condition.

I know there have been posts about techniques to print overlays, and home-printed versions would be fine for me to play with and keep my originals nice. But for common carts just getting a second set makes sense.

Sigh. Why the HELL did you have to bring this up? Upon further review, yes, I would like to have a set with my boxed games and an additional set of at least one each to collect and thumb through like trading cards. Damn it.

Just print out the web pages with the scans and put them in a 3 ring binder. Simple trailer park solution. :P </dropmike>
