Jess Ragan
So hey, I found a Sega Genesis handheld over at Dollar General, presumably manufactured by AtGames. Is it worth the $40 they're charging for the system? I've always wanted a handheld Genny but Sega's own Nomad didn't meet with my expectations. Is the screen crisp and blur-free? How about the compatibility? Are there any games that won't work with the handheld? How's the sound compared to an actual Genesis? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
+Darrin9999
Hey, does it look like this one? Its called the Gopher, It works great the screen is pretty crisp ( I dont know if the pic will do it justice) and the sound is great! I have not tried all the games, but the ones I have all worked with no problems
Jess Ragan
Yep, like that, but with blue trim instead of red/pink. Also, there are twice as many games in this model (not counting the forty naff Chinese games which were included for reasons I have yet to comprehend). This is encouraging, though! Thanks for the information. Edited December 14, 2013 by Jess Ragan
onmode-ky
I assume you're talking about AtGames' portable from last year that has 40 generic games, 37 Sega games, and a trio of Street Fighter and Mega Man games. Well, whatever combination of games are on it, it's one of AtGames' systems that runs on their RedKid (RK) or newer RK2 Genesis-on-a-chip implementations. The general consensus seems to be that these do have some compatibility issues, of varying degrees. Mind you, I have no direct experience with them myself, and all I can tell you is that their poor sound fidelity would keep me away if I were in the market for one. It seems like a lot of people don't particularly mind the sound channels being out of tune, but it's really jarring to my ears. If you do decide to get one, I think Rite Aid stores were advertising them for $30 next week. They were definitely advertising some AtGames something for $30. onmode-ky
+Darrin9999
Its Orange border and it has an sd card slot. For the price its well worth it! I bought mine from stoneagegamer, com it was on sale for $20 i do believe.
Algus
There are a few reviews on the thing. I posted one myself. I'll edit this post with the link when I get home but the quick and dirty is the sound sucks and it can't save game progress but the screen is beautiful and it takes Genesis ROMs on the SD card, including pre patched Sonic games so you can play all the S3&K and Blue Sphere you desire. Genesis has enough arcade games that the lack of saving wasn't a huge issue for me. I love mine.
Falconhood
I was tempted to get this one. I am enjoying the MASTER SYSTEM/GAME GEAR system I just bought, though. "Genesis ROMs on the SD card" so I assume there IS indeed an SD slot on this one. That is NOT a feature on my MS/GG system Edited December 15, 2013 by Falconhood
Algus
I wrote a mini-review of it here http://atariage.com/forums/topic/213345-genesis-portable-80-in-1-any-good/?p=2772500 Here's a review from my favorite classic video game critic http://videogamecritic.com/vgc_genportable.htm Some other thoughts: Part of the problem with the sound is that the internal speakers are AWFUL. Sound quality is significantly improved by the use of headphones or using the TV out (a separate cable). I ended up buying the TV out and AC adapter (it comes with a USB cable only) seperately direct from AT Games. Was glad I did as I do use it enough that it is plugged in a lot. Save the box, it has ample room for the extra cables (and an SD card, though you only need one) Battery life kind of stinks. I can get enough out of it at work, where I only have around an hour to kill, but it is by no means all day entertainment. Usually it gets used around the house and sometimes at a friend's. This is the newest model AFAIK though I do believe a couple of the older models which might be floating around Dollar General and the like have them as well. When you access your SD card games the games are titled by the file name you assign to it, so you will want to spend some time organizing the files on your computer to make the list easy to use. There's no filter so if you go like me and buy a big card and just put EVERY Genesis game on there, it can take awhile to find the game you want. I actually have a second card that just has some key favorites on it.
Falconhood
I bought the last one at the SECOND Rite-Aid I called this morning.

Falconhood
Actually, mine is different...at least the box cover is. Mine isn't the Capcom one. So, other than the box, what's different? Mine is also from 2013, so maybe they fixed the problems?
Algus
Hmm, possible. I think it is only a package redesign as the unit looks the same. I bought mine early this year but the sticker on the back dates it as 11/2012 so I may have purchased an older unit. Does yours have the Capcom games on it still? I'm curious as to whether you have a different lineup of titles now.

Algus
They must have lost the rights to the Capcom games and had to replace them. Now I'm curious as to what they replaced them with.

Algus
Interesting. Virtua Fighter is new. It looks like the rest of the lineup is the same, taking out Wiley Wars and the two versions of Street Fighter for Virtua Fighter. Unless there's a game on the menu not listed on the box. I was trying to do some more research to see what I could find out and I could find listings for the model you guys are talking about but the ATGames website seems to still be selling the old version with the Capcom games. Maybe they stopped producing that version and are still selling through old stock of it but have let this model get out to stores. It doesn't seem to be any different physically, just a new package and Virtua Fighter to replace the Capcom titles.
Bill Loguidice
This is just AtGames selling through 2013 stock. It's the same models, just with a different mix of games. They won't refresh their product line until next year. Based on what I've seen, you won't be able to easily mistake the upcoming products for their previous products (which has been an issue, obviously) for a few different reasons. Hopefully they'll clear out all of this old stock, because it looks like won't be doing themselves any favors going forward if they don't. Asaki
It looks like the rest of the lineup is the same, taking out Wiley Wars and the two versions of Street Fighter for Virtua Fighter. Sounds about right, that's a big game.
onmode-ky
Mine is also from 2013, so maybe they fixed the problems? Well, that's not outside the realm of someday possibility, but it's overly optimistic when we're talking about a company that hasn't fixed their sound problems in, what, 7-8 years of making Genesis plug-n-play systems? If AtGames ever fixes the problems, great, but I think their history should prematurely kill any thought that a minor difference in game lineup might indicate substantial changes under the hood. In other words, believe it when you hear it. Interesting. Virtua Fighter is new. It looks like the rest of the lineup is the same, taking out Wiley Wars and the two versions of Street Fighter for Virtua Fighter. Unless there's a game on the menu not listed on the box. The game lineup is different from the Capcom-equipped handheld's 37 Sega + 3 Capcom + 40 generic in that it's now the same 40 Sega + 40 generic lineup as was on their 80-in-1 plug-n-play unit from last year. The two Street Fighter games and Wiley Wars have been swapped out for Ristar, Sonic 3D Blast, and Virtua Fighter 2. I always thought it odd that they opted to give the portable system the pair of Street Fighter games, instead of giving them to the plug-n-play; the plug-n-play is the one where you can have 2 human players face off, not the portable. onmode-ky
