Drummerboy
Hello, I was wondering, if the Atari 1064 Expansion memory for Atari 600XL, could be used in any Atari 800XL, improving the Atari 800XL RAM, or not work? Any comment, suggest, are welcome. Thanks! Regards.
gilsaluki
I think this may have been covered before. The Atari 1064 module will have no effect on the 800XL. The 800XL already has the internal 64K RAM. The module will not add any additional RAM to the system, nor will it improve any efficiencies, speed, etc. It was designed for the 600XL. Buy a 600XL and use it (very cheap on Ebay). The 600XL is great, small footprint for desk space, yet very capable with the additional RAM. Rybags
First up it requires +5V which the 800XL doesn't have on the PBI but can easily be provided by wiring it in. On the 600XL it replaces the internal RAM - in theory it should do the same on the 800XL. With a fair degree of modification it would probably be possible to mod the 800XL and module such that the RAM is additional to give 128K. But the overall cost and complexity would likely put it over existing ones which are less intrusive and easier to perform.
Drummerboy
Ohhhh!.. Ok, yeah i just wondering, if could be add 64K more to the internal memory. Well, all seems just for the Atari 600XL. Anyway i have the Atari 600XL, and use sometimes. With this memory the Atari 600XL is a great machine. Thanks guys!.
+David_P
For the 800xl, you want either the Yorkie, a UK upgrade I know only from reading about in Atari Classics years ago, or the RAM 320XL. They will increase your 800xl from 64K to 256K or 320K.
Rybags
Much more elegant 64K for the 600XL is to change the Ram chips to the 64k * 4 type. Couple of cuts and added wires, about 1/2 hour's work and under 5 bucks spent.

I'll consider buying one when it's available for sale again
sup8pdct
It wont work even if power is supplied. The 1064 will switch it self in from $4000 till end of memory effectly mirroring the same memory as internal. This has bad written all over it. Haveing 2 chips setting the 6502 data lines high or low at once is never a good idea. James
Mathy
Hello guys And you probably need to upgrade the 600XL to 64kB before you can use the RAM 320XL. Sincerely Mathy

Rybags
Ram 320XL has the jumper (I was one requester) giving the option that it disables internal Ram or not. This is helpful if you have VBXE since it can overlay any Ram section, jumper helps avoid conflict there. Looked at the 1064 schematic - it does have 64K but it looks like there's logic in there that causes it only to activate if either A15/A14 is active, ie - only enables the upper 48K. But you could likely change that easily enough if required. Edited March 10, 2014 by Rybags
rockdoc2010
Say I am building a laptop with a 600XL MB and have failed twice in 64K upgrades( bad MB variants beetle'.).. I have space so i use the 1064 and still have the passthrough pbi... can i install the 1mb or vgxe?
Rybags
I don't think VBXE would work properly with a 1064 installed - they both use /EXTSEL to get their Ram to take precedence over internally installed memory.
