Quickie
Was the 74LS257 a MOS part ? ( 7708 ) The MOS parts seem to have a high failure rate nowadays. Yes, you're right, it was a MOS 7708. I can confirm that MOS parts do have a high failure rate (at least in my case). I've replaced PLAs with weird behaviors (orange screen, multi coloured lines, black screen..), LS series equivalents (black screen), SID chips (no sound or some voices not working), Kernal ROMs (black screen), ... I can certainly do some fashionable keyrings Anyway I love finding MOS Technology ICs on Commodore PCBs, they remind me the good old days. Cheers. shoestring
Still not too bad after 35 years. Fujitsu logic chips from that era are even worse. And it's a major PITA to replace them especially when you have a PCB full of those, luckily I have a temp controlled desolder pump which does help somewhat. I have a few broken MOS chips that I can bring myself to throw away in my parts bin
