The Official NEO-GEO Thread!

I

have a US Top loader in the "strange" green, silver and black box and in the UK to we, well I say we but I can only speak for myself and Im 34 but I can remember in the early to mid 90s, I was about 13ish but yeah I can remember FutureZone selling HomeCarts, they became EB games then GAME but the home carts just vanished and when the CD came about only like specialist game stores that advertised in the game magazines of the day stocked it! As for the Pocket I was a huge fan even imported the B&W version on the Japanese launch day but though it was insane like the next day they announced the Color, well not the next day but you get the idea! The NGPC did OK in the UK, It had a 2% market share and in the States I think it was 3% but I read some internal documents once and they were only aiming for a 10% share! Against Nintendo they would of considered that a win. And I remember seeing it in EB and thinking "this is awesome" but like two months later they just pulled it! Totally dropped it! The support in house and 3rd party I thought was very Impressive, and Im a sucker for anything SNK but I was as impressed with the hard-wear!

And Ive read about this Barone family, so was SNKs US devision just run by a family, as in a mum, dad, kids etc?

MJ

What I know about the Barone family MJ, is that the Japanese thought they had the same orientation style of running a business. So SNK Japan was impressed by them and hired the family to do so. I never heard much after what limited information I gathered afterwards

That's interesting to know MJ. We have plenty of contributors of videos that happen to be from the UK. They use to tell me all types of interesting stories on the market out in England that I wasn't familiar that impressed me. We also have another member here on Atariage member name richard31337 name (Richard Evans) that is a multiple time record holder for Neo-Geo titles like Pulstar and Blazing star at Twin Galaxies. Here some of his videos if you like to see them.

I got a copy of soccer brawl a couple months back for $90. It may cost around that much so I am not sure but the price is probably in that ball park.

That's still a really good deal Evan. Still amazed how you have that with that great price! :)

Yes, that's his own UK version unit in his own house. Rich also has an American version that he recently purchased for his gameroom.

I believe more info of the Barone family is out there. I'm sure it is. But I've seen is mostly bits & pieces of info regarding the later parts when they were in charge with SNK USA. I'll try to check around, but last time I check was 4-5 years ago. It's greatly possible that better articles are out circulating the internet now. :)

I thought a lot of SNK USA troubles were caused directly by SNK JAPAN and the Barone family were just the escape goat

MVS troubles in NA were mainly caused by lack of game accessories (No Wheel & No Gun) and a lack of Artwork for specific games (Full size Marquee's, Side art, and Control panel Art) to grab attention. Its like SNK of Japan never went to a American arcade.

AES troubles was caused by lack of retailers that focused on high end consumer good in the US, outside of Japanese exporter shops which most of the US lacked

NeoGeo CD issues outside the slow CD speed was how to market it without hurting AES/MVS Sales as it had similar games and it kinda was grouped into Sega CD/ Saturn category for better or worst especially since they ported titles to both

Hyper Geo Neo system sounds like the system was rushed in the design phase in trying to get 3d technologies to try to compete against NAOMI or Namco System boards and everyone knew it.

Plus side they fix the above Neo Geo MVS Troubles listed.

NeoGeo Pocket releasing 2 months before Nintendo Gameboy Color which also tainted the public to the NeoGeo Color for no good reason

The funny thing about me picking up that copy of soccer brawl is I saw it on one of those retro deals you post here and got it for cheap.

Good to know Evan. Glad those posting helped you purchase it to add to your already excellent collection. :)

Nicely said enoofu. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

I personally believe that what could've saved the original SNK was they should've made the transition to 3D gaming while still concentrating on the Neo-Geo on the side. The Neo-Geo was innovative for the 2D market in the early 90's. But to stay ahead of the competitors they should've also prepared themselves for the 3D genre around 92-93 To compete with Namco, Sega, and the rest that were doing so. When Samurai Shodown 64 was available, it was all choppy graphics that looked completely unpolished and outdated compared to the critically acclaimed Tekken 3. I knew then it was going t be impossible for SNK to catch up to the rivals.

Forcing developers to use 64 bit programming in 97, having inhouse developers having limited experience on 3d games, and hardware not based on any consumer market console probably was the downfall of NeoGeo Hyper64, sad they didn't make 2d games with it.

----------------------------------------

Also did Samurai Shodown 7 finally get released,as it difficult to tell since Taito X4 games/stats are mostly in Japanese

I don't believe so with SS7 enoofu. I would have to look around to check. But last time I remember, it didn't.

Does anyone know if the MVS multi carts will work with the Daedulus converter on an AES? I'm thinking about getting one.

I have the Daedalus converter and a 161 in 1. It does work, but not 100% in my case. I have two AES systems. On my early model US system only the older games work. I can't play games like Prehistoric Isle because they will not start up, however an older game like Super Baseball 2020 would work fine. I thought this was due to the 161 in 1 needing to draw a lot of power to work properly. For this AES system I had to replace the power supply with a third party one that had lower voltage, so that could be part of the problem.

I also tried the 161 in 1 with the Daedalus on my other Neo Geo AES system and got slightly better results. With this system I was able to play more games, but still not all. For instance, now I could actually play Prehistoric Isle, but it froze half way through the first level.

The Daedalus converter and a 161 in one combination may work best if you have one of the later model Japanese AES systems. I believe those have beefier power supplies.

161in1 is kind of a ticking time bomb from what I've been reading. It likes to jack with voltage protections on the hardware, very expensive SNK hardware. I put it up. I can't decide if I'll leave it to rot or let someone else roll the dice with it. And that's all the same farmed out factory funky Neo Geo multicarts. They have voltage problems by design, but also bypass voltage regulation on the system which can fry it albeit unlikely.
