Calibrating an Apple ][ joystick? (with no manual adjustment wheels)

So I picked up a seemingly off brand joystick, probably a clone of the original Apple brand joystick as it looks similar. It has holds and dials for adjusting the joystick's spring and natural center, but whenever I plug it into the Apple //e, it thinks the joystick's center is off to the right. No matter what I do, I cannot get the center to be where it should be. This joystick has no manual wheels for adjusting the pots. I even opened it to look inside. Is there anything I can do?

does your computer react normally with other joysticks, I have the same issue and its a bad 558 timer which is not that easy to find (although I did for less than a couple bucks, just have not replaced it)

Yes, the computer works fine with another joystick, though it connects to an internal connector. The new joystick I got, I plugged into a 9 pin port on the back.
