Does Wii U play video?

I never used it this way often, but I sometimes put comedies on the SD card of my original Wii and would watch them. With the Wii U supporting hard drives, wondering if there's a way to get it to play media files stored on the drive?

There's no such support. If you're going to get anything going, it will have to involve Wii mode and the homebrew channel. Wii U media support is limited to streaming apps and what you can get to stream in the internet browser.

Seems to be limited in the internet browser..I can play only youtube stuff but cant play yahoo media. Tried open a PDF as well can't do it

I believe that it doesn't have flash capabilities. Only HTML5.

 

It does have PDF capabilities, but I'm not sure how capable they are.

I only got a Wii U last week, but I believe you can hack the Wii U's software-based Wii mode similarly to an actual (old) Wii. Then I assume you would be able to install one of the media players available & play your videos.

 

edit: Of course, since it'd be in Wii mode, it would be 480p at best.
