Nebulon
I've got a Tandy 1000 that seems to be outputting monochrome from the composite out port. Has anyone seen this type of thing before on these machines? The manual says that the composite port is supposed to output in color.
John_L
Are you using a modern monitor, or the one that originally came with the unit?
The Usotsuki
I've certainly gotten color out of the composite out of the 2 Tandys I've tried it with, a 1000EX and a 1000HX. But perhaps not by default. The color burst is supposed to be under software control.
Nebulon
I've tried both a Magnavox 1084 monitor and also a composite to coax converter hooked up to a color TV. Both display as monochrome. On the 1084, I can tell that the monitor itself is in color mode since there are two thin lines (one red and one green). They appear to be outside of the display area for the computer. So it looks like those particular lines are a product of the monitor itself. How do you enable color burst mode?
The Usotsuki
I would think it's default. MODE CO80 and MODE CO40 are supposed to do it in DOS. Perhaps when setting 320,200 mode the game also sets it wrong and kill the color burst, this is possible...
Nebulon
Well, I found this little blurb about using function keys to change video output modes: https://archive.org/stream/Sams_Computerfacts_Tandy_Model_1000SX_Computer_1987_Howard_Sams#page/n23/mode/2up However, either my timing is bad for pressing F2 or it just doesn't have any affect on my machine (a Tandy 1000HD). ? The Usotsuki
Doesn't that only work on the EX/HX? Edited July 31, 2014 by The Usotsuki
Nebulon
Doesn't that only work on the EX/HX? Not sure.... It's in the hardware reference for the Tandy 1000SX, so I kinda' figured it would work on a 1000HD as well.
Great Hierophant
Those function keys only work on the EX, HX, SX and TX. The Tandy should default to color composite output. Try MODE CO80 or CO40 to see whether that restores the color.
Nebulon
Just an update on this one. I finally got around to trying this again. The MODE commands didn't work on this machine, because someone updated DOS (it isn't running Tandy DOS anymore). What ended up working was to hold F12 until it beeps. Then release the F12 button and let it finish booting to DOS. I tested it out with Thexder and it worked great. The BIOS on this machine reads v. 01.01.00. Thanks everyone. zylon
Cool. I was going to tell you that the RCA video just connects to the video-in on your TV, not the coaxial connector. I use TX, SX, and EX still.
The Usotsuki
http://3.buric.co/tmode.zip You would think it wouldn't matter. Anyway, this is mode.exe from Tandy MS-DOS 2.11.22.
