ryanmercer
basicly you are talking about text adventures we called them in Europe? Yes. Games that are mostly, if not all, text.
Stormtrooper of Death
The Scott Adam adventures where the first i played on my 16K Atari 600XL. Yep most Scott Adams Adventures only neede 16Kb of ram. And were also on tape.
Shannon
Scott Adams Adventure games were pretty good. Nowhere near the quality of infocom text adventures. However I do remember playing through a few. Funhouse is the only one I remember.
bbking67
My favorite was definitely Planetfall. Had an amazing experience with this one... Hitchhikers was just too hard and I don't think I ever finished it. I played through the Zorks... a few of the other Infocom games were very hard and not as enjoyable to me. +David_P
Yes, Planetfall was my favourite as well. The puzzle that took me forever was the amoeba in the computer - I missed the obvious hint in the text for the longest time. I've still got the complete game in one of my Atari storage bins, complete with the postcards etc. And, of course, who can ever forget O, they ruled the solar system Near ten thousand years before In their single starcrossed scout ships Mining ast'roids, spinning lore. adam242
Planetfall was excellent! Got emotionally invested in that one as a kid. Cried over Floyd dying... Yes, 30 years later I can admit that. I'll throw my hat in for Hitchhiker's, too. There were a few good ANALOG ones, too... Though the titles escape me.
Shannon
Hollywood Hijinx is pretty good. Also Nord and Bert couldn't make heads or tails of it. However that one I know never made it to the 'ol 8-bit. The biggest key in Hitchiker's is to remember to give the sandwich to the dog... Or you will be in BIG trouble later on! CapitanClassic
I always thought that Suspended was an interesting take on the genre. The inability to move your character, and instead have to maneuver your robots around which each had different sensors (based off the senses, Sight, Hearing, etc.) was innovative. That Poet character was always annoying, never answering anything directly and resorting to rhymes. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspended Edited August 14, 2014 by CapitanClassic
high voltage
Love Infocom, see my collection here: http://www.videogamecollectors.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=202027
littleman jack
I liked Suspended, Zork, and Starcross(it came in a flying saucer, I think this was the title). They were all Infocom and very addictive and difficult.

Quite a lot of rare and late ones there. Have you played all of them? Edited August 27, 2014 by slx
Wrathchild
Jymm Pearson's "Escape from Traam" and "Curse of Crowley Manor" were both part of the first adventures I played on the Atari and, as such, remain favourites. The tension building in Curse of Crowley Manor (with that added sound effect) was well done. I do mean to make a AtariMax FlashCart compilation one day in tribute of Jymm's work, similar to the Scott Adams and Brian Howarth carts. ryanmercer
My sio2pc came today but I spent most of the evening playing asteroids, space invaders and trying to figure out Doctor Who Adventure. I'll probably dig into all the great recommendations you have all made for text based games this weekend. I need to figure out a better seating arrangement though as my back is killing me from 2 hours of play the way I was sitting heh.
NRV
I remember some nice articles about the Synapse adventures: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-essex_1879.html http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-mindwheel_3404.html http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-brimstone_793.html But I don't know if they are at the level of the Infocom ones. The manuals looks nice anyways (and you need them for the password protection).
idavis
Lets not leave out Sands of Egypt. And there was also a game called Hacker. You didn't need any instructions, because it didn't come with any. You had to hack your way in from the get go.
+slx
Lets not leave out Sands of Egypt. Not entirely text based but a very nice game indeed. Quite advanced for its time with animated graphics and 'overlay' objects appearing and disappearing as the story progresses, imho it runs circles around Scott Adams games. Actually that was my first adventure game ever and as I'm not a native speaker it required a lot of browsing in the dictionary to solve but eventually I solved it on my own. dashv
Hitchhiker's Guide and the first Zork were both great! But let's not forget such gems as: Leather Goddess of Phobos And Farmers Daughter Edited September 4, 2014 by dashv
Stormtrooper of Death
Dont forget the Adventure "Mordon's Quest". (by Melbourne House) I once had this game on tape. It needs 32Kbyte ram. Didnt work on my 16K Atari 600XL. But works on (of course) 32K or more Atari 8bit computers. Here is a link with some info on mobygames. http://www.mobygames.com/game/atari-8-bit/mordons-quest
