Flash Cartridges and OSS (Basic XL/XE)

Recommended Posts

I looked at the Maxflash Multi-cart and the SIC! Cartridge. I've also looked at the various side loading cartridges. None of the seem to be able to emulate or load OSS cartridge images because of the unusual bank switching.

Sadly most all of my atari stuff (along with most everything else I owned) was stolen about 2 years ago. I had a significant collection. Unfortunately I have little funds to buy stuff so basically now I have a 65XE (no mods yet) and an XF551 that works. I really want to get Basic XE (and the other OSS cartridges) up and running but I can't afford what I see them going for.

Did I miss something or am I out of luck?

I hope to get an Atari 130XE or mod my 65XE to 128k+, but right now I am just happy to be back in the game. I had several Atari 130XE's and multiple Basic XE's as I used to use them like people use micro-controllers today. I also had at least one of the 400/800/600XL/1200XL/65XE/XEGS plus numerous 2600's both 2/4 port 5200's, and 7800. I even had dozens of mint unopened carts carts for 7800. I had at least one of each printer except the laser printer. I know I can run emulators but to me it is not the same thing. I was 11 when I got my Atari 400 and 410 Tape Drive; It changed my life as I am sure it did for many of you. Emulators don't bring back those amazing memories of discovering what could be done with the amazing hardware.

I appreciate any help and guidance on how to proceed on the OSS front. Thanks!

I recall that the Maxflash Cartridge Studio you make an .ATR of the .ROM file and then use the .ATR in a real Atari to burn the Maxflash cart.

Shoot, somebody already answered. Yes, Atarimax Maxflash carts can do BASIC XE, ACTION!, OSS carts. Just the 1 mbit cart cost about $25 + $6 ship , you can get 5 for $100.

THE!CART might be your best option.

They are still being sold. Just ordered and received 3 more of them for a total of 5.

They run all OSS cartridge images without any modifications.

If I could only get 1 of the many different flash cart this would be the one.

Hello guys

The cartridges Santosp makes, were designed by BigBen, who isn't making them anymore. Bigben's batch was good, Santosp's first batch was good. At the Fujiama 2014 we found out, at least five cartridges of the second/latest batch didn't work. They weren't recognized by the computer, couldn't even be erased. I've returned mine. Word has it, Santos and the guy who organized the group buy used cheaper parts.

Sincerely

OK, so I'll better test mine thoroughly.

Hello slx

The cartridges that didn't work on the Fujiama, didn't work at all. You could plug them in, but nothing happened after switching the computer on. Erasing them (in the hope that they can be reflashed) doesn't work. So if you turn the computer on and you see a menu, they are OK, if not, they are not. Testing is that simple.

Sincerely

Yeah, the original passthrough cart works, but then you're on SDX 4.2 instead of 4.46, losing, most notably, 512 byte sectors.

I guess you know about the 4.42 spx cart upgrade. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/136505-spartados-x-4-42/page-4?do=findComment&comment=1680553

I would guess OSS language carts still won't work, there's too much memory conflict.

Since I like old-fashioned hardware Zenon/Dial was so kind to handmake a pass-through SDX cartridge having 128KiB flash memory. It works perfect since 2009 with my oss super carts (which are de-bugged as well) and features an additional rtc. The cart is used to test sdx developments on real hardware and to work on the user guide.

I've looked at it, but am unsure about digging into my cart. Plus, the cart gets to be ridiculous once I have Action! and the R-Time 8 plugged into it. :-)

I can only afford to go one route [for now] and it seems like THE!CART was my best option, with a 5 pack of AtariMax Cartridges coming in second place. Having 5 carts (with lower capacity) was tempting, but native OSS091 support of THE!CART pushed it into first place. I guess I could have just got 1 MaxFlash cart, but I felt like I would be reflashing it a lot.

Thank you everyone, all your input was value to me and it's sure nice talking to people who understand (because my wife sure doesn't...)

I got a SpX 4.46 maxflash to work with a binary load ACTION.OBJ ('X D5:ACTION.OBJ'). You can do 1K .ACT source. Can't do 7K .ACT source (runs out of memory).

Just boot up 4.46 without BASIC, load ACTION.OBJ and it will work. You can't 'CAR' out of DOS to ACTION, you have to re-load ACTION.OBJ.
