atari2600 Paddles & Driving Controllers Question

Are driving controllers and the paddles controllers the same thing for the atari2600 sysytem ?

 

 

if not, whats the difference

Are driving controllers and the paddles controllers the same thing for the atari2600 sysytem?  If not, whats the difference?

 

The paddles are analog potentiometers (like a volume knob) wired together as a pair to one plug. It has a tennis racquet on it.

 

The driving controller is a rotary quadrature, digital switch and it can spin around and around without stopping. A pair of these were packaged together with the Indy 500 (Sears Race) cartridge and released in 1977. They have a small race car on them and they are not wired together as a pair. In recent years a few other games have been programmed to use these unique controller.

im getting a pair of driving controllers from a friend,says they seem to be new and come in the box, hes bringing em over to me, says since im the one that likes to play video games

Ya can't use the driving controller on Paddle games, at least that what I'm told by the experts here.

guess im gonna buy indy 500 for 1.99 on ebay, any other reccomended games for the driving controllers ?

Eh, that's the only orginal game that uses the driving controller. There are a few modern homebrews that take advantage of it though.

There are homebrew versions of Asteroids, and a game called Thrust DC that uses the Driving controller.

The upcoming Death Derby will use the driving controller ..

 

Several homebrew Vectrex games use this also ..
