+MrFish
There's also many things I can do with a single line on the command prompt that would take hundreds of clicks. Why is there no way in Windows Explorer to do a "rename *.nfo *.txt"? This isn't advanced stuff. Interesting note, because I just faced this the other day. Luckily for me line feed translation was a bonus for what I was doing, so my tool was able to kill both birds with one stone. Can't doesn't mean Windows couldn't. But then they hide extensions from users by default to begin with. So why would they be interested in aiding people with renaming them in bulk... There are some other simple tools/utilities out there for handling the task. But they shouldn't be needed. Another one of the deficiencies in an operating system that's been around more than long enough to know better. Anyway, I know one up and coming GUI that may be able to do things that Windows can't (won't). Edited October 31, 2014 by MrFish

It is killer for bulk renaming and also has some other features. But yeah - there's no reason an external tool should be required, nor should having to drop to command line. flashjazzcat
On the one hand, 'rename *.nfo to *.txt' is a filter operation which quite suits a command line approach. On the other hand, it's pretty cheap to implement a "change selected files' extensions to..." option in a drop-down menu.

Well, "Ant Renamer" does the job under Windows for me, especially when I have to rename thousands of files. Used it a lot when converting animated GIF`s or AVI`s into animated TIP`s. Of course there is also Free Commander or Total Commander which could do that as well. http://www.antp.be/software/renamer http://ant-renamer.findmysoft.com/ http://www.freecommander.com/ http://www.ghisler.com/index.htm Edited October 31, 2014 by CharlieChaplin
Nebulon
I propose a project (that would take a team of programmers YEARS to complete) to re-write Windows XP into pure x86 assembly. It would be absolute paradise for the gamers I recall an old article on a rewrite of Win 95 in assembly by some hot-shot German programmers. Apparently they managed to squeeze it down to six 3.5" DS/HD diskettes. They did it to prove a point. I don't think it included extensive drivers or anything like that. Still though... Kyle22
I have heard about that. I would think if it's 100% compatible that regular Win95 drivers should work.
+wood_jl
My favorite philosophy would be that trolls be confined to this thread, rather than polluting the original, and needlessly antagonizing the proprietor of the awesome GUI. Just me, however.
