The MilkMan
Just wondering if anyone knows or remembers the $amount$ that the Atari went for back in the day. As a kid myself, I think I got mine for a birthday or something, so I don't think I ever knew the original purchase price.
Room 34
We got mine in May 1982 at Kmart for $149.97 or whatever their extra cents were at the time. Basically, at least at that point, $150 was the going rate in my town. Not sure what it was when it first came out.
ApolloBoy
It was $200.
Rob Mitchell
We paid $179.99 for the Telegames Video Arcade (2600:VCS) console (with Target Fun) and $19.99 for Tank Plus (Combat) at Sears in September 1977. Anyone who paid more .. got ripped off! Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
ATARI TROLL
189.99 was what my parents paid for it when I was 6. Of course you still get a few fools that will pay that price on EBAY Cheers
Tempest
I swear my six-switch box has a $189 price tag on it from Toys R Us, but I'd have to see it agian to be sure. Tempest
AtariDude
I can remember that it was under $200 but I no longer remember the exact amount. Of course back then $200 was like getting a console today for about $350 / $400 given the cost of inflation.
broncoman
dad told me it was 200 in 80 when i first got mine
sku_u
I was only five when we got out our first Atari in 1977. All I remember was the excitement that Christmas when I opened it up and started playing Combat against my father. I can say that my 5200 was 249.99 b/c that still has the original price sticker on it from Child World.
D.Yancey
I'm pretty sure I remember it going for $249.99 until after Crristmas in 1980. I think it dropped by $100, down to $149.99 sometime in 1981. That was when I struck a bargain at the now defunct Woolco for a sixer including only Combat. I purchased Space Invaders for $24.95 that day from Sears because Woolco was SOLD OUT! I don't know if I was ripped off, but I'll say it was the happiest day of my life! Soon to follow were Laser Blast, Freeway, Skiing, Kaboom!, Stampeede... and the list goes on. My life was never to be dull again as long as I had access to my Atari!!! Ahh, the memories.
gulag picture radio
The $150 mark rings a bell. I can recall a mom and pop video store having a sign up in their window when the price dropped. There were also selling Star Raiders when it was new for $168 because of the "valuable" controller that came with it. I can't imainge that they sold a whole lot at that price... I held out 'til I picked mine up at Zayre for .99.
DeV0
Mine cost $199 Aus when the australian $ was worth something. It came with space invaders and a promo deal where you sent off the form and received 6 titles,,, Which turned up when i was skipping school on a "sick" day. It was a vader i think and also broke down the first day i had it.

SS
There was a boxed heavy sixer in the PhillyClassic auction with a $159 price tag still stuck to it.
