Many thank Kevin. That title is probably pretty rare. Any chance to get a raw low level dump? Did you mention you have a Kroyflux?

Btw. This is related to Virtuoso Desktop Studio I guess? Seems to be the same company (ETA).

Maybe I can get a Kyroflux dump. I have one, and I could probably even find it. I never figured out how to use it. Maybe I'll try agian.

Yes, same company.

OK, I think I got the Kyroflux working — but I don't know how to use it for Atari disks.

I did:

dtc -fvirt.img -i0

and it worked for a while and spit out 168 files with names like virt.img83.1.raw, virt.img83.0.raw, virt.img82.1.raw. Is that what I want?

A demo version of Virtuoso with some sample files was available in Antic (on the disks at least), April 1988. There is a file named VPLAY.OBJ, this is the demo version of Virtuoso and there are four files without extender (all have a length of 52 sectors), these are the demo files...

To me Virtuoso seems to be similar to Movie-Maker, i.e. one can generate animations + sound/music with it. Alas, the demos are very simple and cheap, not sure if the full version is better...

OK, I did this: dtc -p -fVirtuoso\track_ -g2 -y -i0 -i2 -k2 -b-8

...then this: a8rawconv Virtuoso\track_00.0.raw Virtuoso.atx

...which told me:

Reading KryoFlux track stream set (96 TPI)...

Bad sector size!
Bad sector size!
Bad sector size!
Bad sector size!
Bad sector size!
Writing ATX file: Virtuoso.atx
WARNING: Track 39, sector 7: 1 phantom sector found.
WARNING: Track 39, sector 6: 1 phantom sector found.
WARNING: Track 39, sector 17: Deleted sector found.
WARNING: Track 39: Missing sectors: 5.
1 missing sector, 2 phantom sectors, 1 sector with errors

...and I got this: Virtuoso.atr

(Rename that to .atx — stupid forum won't let me upload .atx)

...which boots but hangs like its failing the copy protection check.

So — now what?

Can you upload the raw dump to some place, at least temporary?

Note that you are dumping both sides with that command line. Does it have something on the back side? And I think it won't work unless you have a special modified drive. But don't think this should affect the dump of the top side. It should be ok regardless.

This looks like it came from an older version of a8rawconv that didn't ignore certain bits in the sector header correctly -- was fixed in 0.92.

I shied away from 0.92 because I didn't see a Mac version, as with some of the earlier ones. Will see if it works on my Mac.

Raw dump posted.

I dumped both sides because I have no idea what I'm doing. It's a single-sided disk in a single-sided drive.

Dump is ok, many thanks. If your drive is really single sided, it is quite a rarity! Are you sure?

No. I just thought PC drives were single sided and, as stated, have no idea what I'm doing.

Finally being able to use this Kyroflux will make things better as I archive disks. I bought it in 2011 or so.

phaeron, will you compile a Mac version of 0.92?

well reality is starting to bite...was hoping against the odds that

3-in-1 College & Pro Football (Lance Haffner Games)

might turn up here - but i'm thinking it's definitely one that's as rare as hen's teeth

All the Valpar stuff is needed (except the valForth 1.1 disk, as mentioned above), and I haven't seen a dump for pns-Forth either.

AtariOnline has an ATR for QS Forth 1.0. It looks to be a good dump, but I've only tested it minimally at this point.

OK, now that I have it working I'm giving the KyroFlux a workout. The attached ZIPs have raw dumps of pos Forth 1.5, ValDOS I (two copies), ValDOS II, QF Forth 1.0, TextWizard 1.3, and ValForth_Turtle_and_valGraphics_and_Advanced_Floating_Point_Routines (two copies)

Savetz_Kyroflux_dumps_from_Bard1.zip

Savetz_Kyroflux_dumps_from_Bard2.zip

Next: do the following need Kyroflux dumps? C/65, Mac/65, On-Line Systems JawBreaker, Datasoft Zaxxon, Synapse Shamus. I assume no because common, but might as well ask.

And seriously — I have thousands of disks. How can I check myself to see which are already properly imaged?

C/65, if you have a version other than 1.0 (not sure if any others ever existed).

Mac/65, if you have any versions other than what can be found here: Mac/65 @ AtariWiki

[Edit: ...or that have any versions of Bug/65 included on the disk other than 2.0.]

Thank you for dumping these titles, Kevin!

And seriously — I have thousands of disks. How can I check myself to see which are already properly imaged?

I've been steadily working on a website that can be used to browse the preservation database. It's just been slow going but I'm making continual progress. I'm hopeful I can make a minimal version public in the next few weeks.

Even though the preservation torrent has several hundred titles and the database its generated from has a few thousand, the actual number of titles considered "preserved" is fairly small. The current definition of "preserved" is confirming that two or more dumps are identical and at least one of those is a flux dump for disks or a WAV file for cassettes.

The disk-based titles that fall into the "preserved" category are listed below. We would be extremely grateful for any additional dumps you are willing to contribute. Likewise, if you need any information or raw dumps from us, please let me know.

Here's the KyroFlux raw for Tiny Tots by Athena software

The disk was amazingly squeaky and loud in the drive even after I cleaned the media. I wonder if this will work. Someone let me know.

The disk has about half a dozen sectors damaged at the start. It might be possible to recover though.

Kevin

Just to share my experience here, this can be caused by two things (not to say there aren't other possibilities).

The first one is the disk could be dried out. This type of squeak is pretty unique sounding and not nearly as harsh. It was suggested here to use a lubricating solution to help with this situation but I have yet to try it as I don't have any. I've been able to successfully dump many disks even when this noise occurs and will find that the drive head is still clean after the dump.

The second, and what I see more commonly, is that "gunk" has accumulated on the drive head. It may only take a few revolutions for it to happen with particularly bad disks. The "gunk" is often dirt or mold but can even sometimes be the disk material itself coming apart. I've had this happen even after cleaning the media with alcohol. This noise (more of a squeal than a squeak) is usually more loud and piercing than the above one. If you let the dumping process continue, you're likely doing physical damage to the disk. I will immediately abort the dump when I hear this, clean the drive head, and start over. If the squeal starts up again, rinse and repeat.

It can sometimes take several attempts, but I've been able to salvage some pretty bad disks using this approach.

What about the many titles that were released only in ED? E.g. Change, Adax, Android, Artefakt Przodków, Bang! Bank!, Barbarian, Captain Gather and MANY others... For the time being there is no possibility to convert them to ATX format. :_(

Also I found a protected DD disk in my collection - a Top Archiver (TOPAR) on the side A (and with Runiver program on the side B) by Krzysztof 'Banfisoft' Wyszatycki from Wrocław. It would be great if the new specification of the ATX format would provide support for ED and DD densities... :)

I attached a Kryoflux dump of the side A made with unmodified 48tpi drive.

Here is log from the AUFIT v1.3 by Jean Louis-Guérin (DrCoolZic):
