Moo
What are the most impressive 7800 games, visual wise and soundwise. Also, what's the best homebrew?
Nesbroslash
I'm sure a modern homebrew could do something even more incredible, but Ballblazer is always a good mention. It's got some really smooth movement animation, and the music's pretty good for the 7800. Edited February 28, 2015 by Nesbroslash
+save2600
Having gotten back into the 7800 after a short reprieve, gotta say: The latest home-brews found here in the store are absolutely incredible!! Especially Bob's (PacManPlus here) offerings. Easily some of the best home-brews I've had the pleasure of experiencing on *any* system. A "few" home-brews that I've bought and am floored by lately include (and please pardon the super brief descriptions here, no way represents all of the features and options most of these games have to offer): Frenzy - you like Berzerk? You like Frenzy? Umm, yeah and even includes speech! Crazy Brix - love that it features analog paddle control (a must for these types of games IMO) and these pong/breakout type games are even more fun on vintage systems somehow. They just are. Pac-Man Collection - Wow! Options galore and love the way the game plays and feels. Excellent difficulty ramp and ghost behavior. Scramble - excellent conversion for the not always so humble 7800. Space Duel - NOBODY has ever attempted to translate this to any other home game system AFAIK. That's almost enough for me right there. lol Missing a tethered mode, but there does exist cooperative/competitive AND the graphics/gameplay are outstanding. Space Invaders - popped this in for just a few minutes and is pretty much what I expected - outstanding version of a classic. Love all the different options and even features some familiar 2600 options as well! Tons of features packed in this "old" standby that never, ever seems to tire. Super Pac-Man - just re-purchased and had to have again. Was always a favorite Pac game of mine and this translation does not disappoint. Have Astro Blaster, Armor Attack II, Beef Drop and Worm on the way too. Will probably end up with nearly the rest of 7800 homebrew offerings before too long, they're simply that good!
+save2600
Favorite original releases include: Both DK's - getting a little pricey these days, but they're worth it. Asteroids - excellent graphical variant & 2-player simultaneous action Joust - probably the best home version Dig Dug - another "probably best" Xevious - excellent Robotron - double fisted action with 2 controllers and a coupler! Centipede - near perfect & features 2-player simultaneous play Galaga - great for what it is. Could be improved today I'm sure, but still great. Mario Bros. - another great translation Midnight Mutants - is fun and "cool" if you're a fan of the Munsters (which I am) especially. Food Fight - besides MAME or owning the arcade game, where/how else you gonna play this? I really pretty much enjoy all of the arcade translations that the 7800 has to offer. Would really, really love to see a version of Black Widow someday. Especially for those of us with an original 2600 coupler - just begs for translation.
jongolo
Food Fight is one of my favorites on the 7800! Fun to play and it has catchy sound and music. I always thought Tower Toppler was one of the most visually impressive games on the 7800. The animation is smooth and the underwater bonus stages with parallax scrolling are beautiful!

Soundwise, definitely Astro Blaster and Jinks for the voice synthesis. Yikes, forgot all about Scrapyard Dog regarding video. Will add it to the list. Thanks for that mention. For both the 'video' and 'audio' listings, I only included original retail released titles - otherwise, certainly the prototypes/originally unreleased Sirius and Plutos would be among them. Likewise for Astro Blaster, it would indeed be included, along with a bunch of other homebrews. Jinks though still doesn't make my list. The voice(s)/sample(s) at the beginning are very nice, and I even like the intro level music a lot. However, the in-game effects are just too grating, too often, and unfortunately offset the good (at least for me).

I had to look up a video of the game since I didn't know it had voices in it, and it was really weird, because they lifted them straight from Gauntlet! It plays the announcer saying "Welcome", one of the game sound effects, one of the thief's taunts, and then one of the elf's various hurt noises. I guess it makes sense, since they had the rights likely to use Gauntlet stuff for home systems and such, but it's still a very weird place to hear them. ataritiger
For 1984 ballblazer was amazingly smooth visually, one of the "super carts". But most 7800 "super carts" were just as regular as regular carts. Ninja Golf is amazing graphic wise, up there color and sprite wise with the master system type graphics, but no audio really. Bummer. Maybe an audio hack can be done one day or not hack but patch.
BassGuitari
Midnight Mutants, Commando, Basketbrawl, and Alien Brigade come to mind.

R.O.T.S
I like some of the detail in Impossible Mission with the droids and such , also I will say MS Pacman and Tower Toppler.
Rick Dangerous
Waterski was cool. Motopsycho was ahead of it's time for the 7800
Magic Knight
Sirius and Plutos are both impressive. If Compared with the xl/xe version of Zybex (which is similar) - it's a graphically better game for colours and objects. I was blown away after playing zybex for years! Sad part was that this was never released in its day and a pokey soundtrack would have been great for this quality.

Cousin Vinnie
How can you respond to a topic like this that asks "What is the most impressive 7800 game graphically" and not mention Tower Toppler? It's by far the best
Nutsy Doodleheimer
No mention for Ninja Golf!?!? I friggin love that game! Also Scrapyard Dog. SMB for the 7800. Edited April 6, 2015 by Retrogamer81081
+GoldenWheels
I am always impressed with how much stuff Joust has flying around the screen without flicker or (much) slowdown. Graphically it won't blow anyone away but performance wise I think it is impressive.

Classic Pac
I can't believe this, we have some HARDCORE 7800 fans here and they all missed the 2 most impressive games made. F 18 Hornet Have you all forgotten you can actually fly through both gates and hangers?!! It was that very game that caused someone to figure that the 7800 could do polygons...very limited of course. Also the game scales, you can go from ground level to very high and the game scales smoothly. Tower Toppler This game to me is almost 3D, Unlike most 8bit games when an object is floating around it almost blends in to the background. But in this game they both move and stand out. Giving an almost 3D like appearance. Not to mention the tower turns when you do, not even the NES version of this game does that. You should be ashamed you forgot these amazing titles Edited April 21, 2015 by Classic Pac
Shinju
I always thought Mean18 was pretty impressive graphically for the 7800. Xenophobe if it had Pokey audio would have put the NES port in the trash. Edited April 24, 2015 by Shinju
