Nebulon
An in-context look at classic computers: https://archive.org/stream/Omni_Complete_Catalog_of_Computer_Hardware_and_Accessories_1984_Omni_Publications#page/n29/mode/2up
JamesD
Not a bad article but I wouldn't base a purchase solely on his comments. The C64 BASIC lacks "Priny Using".The Coleco uses the Z80... It includes 80K of memory, means there is some sort of memory selection trickery going on;
carlsson
I like the breakdown: Micros under $1,000 Personal computers from $1,000 - $2,000 Small Business computers between $2,000 and $3,500 Luxury models over $3,500 Portable computers I'm a little surprised to see the Jupiter Ace listed at $175 in 1984, as if I understand correctly Jupiter Cantab was starting to liquidate back in the UK and just a little later in the year those sold for less than £50. Also the base model of the BBC Micro at $995 seems extreme, although it was pricy also in the UK. The ACT Apricot at $3100 might also be a sign that UK oriented computers became much more expensive in the US than you would've thought. Then again, several US machines also grew impossibly expensive over in Europe so it might be a built in effect of the global economy.
