InfernalKeith
I'm not that well versed in RPG's, on the TI or elsewhere, but I'm interested in learning. I found an original cassette of Wizard's Lair and was thinking about giving it some play time on the real iron this week. I thought there'd been a discussion of it in a long-ago thread, but a search turned up nothing. Have any of you played it, and would you consider it decent for an XB dungeon crawl? budz2355
Only rpgs I have played are legends I and II and of course ToD. ....let us know how it is please
Opry99er
Wizards Lair is okay... It is well done for the time and format. I prefer Old Dark Caves or Legends, but Wizards Lair has its place for sure.
+adamantyr
I've played both Wizard's Lair and Revenge. And own both! It's a decent XB dungeon crawl. Challenging and very atomspheric. The only complaint I have is that neither have a great map system. I wrote up some material on it on my CRPG site and also scanned in the manuals.
InfernalKeith
That may have been the writeup I was thinking of, Adam. Going to check that out now, thanks!
+adamantyr
http://www.adamantyr.com/crpg/article_01.htm The TI Game Shelf has PDF's of the manuals as well... I don't recall if I scanned them or someone else did, but I have originals of both.
InfernalKeith
I forgot what a great writeup on RPG's that was, Adam. I'm gonna put in some major screen time with Wizard's Lair tonight. I've also got a boxed original Sword of Fargoal for the Vic-20 that I'm looking forward to delving into.
+Schmitzi
oh a very nice homepage Adam. I have added this progs to the list Thanks
InfernalKeith
Off to an auspicious start so far...
+adamantyr
Yep, I saw that screen a lot... What got you? I see you make it to the second level at least!
InfernalKeith
The dwarf seems to be the biggest baddie, or maybe it was a goblin on level 2? I played a few times today and it's starting to blur. A little frustrating trying to find enough healing and some weapons on a level. After a certain amount of time you're whisked to level 2 whether you've explored all of 1 or not. It resets your constitution, too, which seems weird. +adamantyr
On the first level, it's Faery, Elf and Dwarf in that order of difficulty... Yeah, one tip is that you always explore as much of the level as you can. You need to get the best weapons and shields. Each time you descend a level, you get your constitution reset to a minimum of 10; if you have over 10 you'll keep it. Also, always use T to detect for traps on EVERYTHING. Traps seriously debilitate you and it's especially not worth it on treasure chests. I'd just bypass treasure and go for items and magic. matthew180
Wait a minute, I think I added a direction to that game, i.e. it would display N, S, E, or W at the top...
InfernalKeith
It displays a direction until you die, and then the "RATING:" line wipes it out.
+adamantyr
Hmm... the code for the game is very compact and well-written. For each level there is a prescribed number of items, so the game is in fact NOT as random as you'd think. You will be able to find all the necessary spells and items to complete the game, if you are diligent about exploring and finding them... I started to type out the exact items on each level but I desisted... why spoil the fun? I don't know where I heard it, but I recall a rumor that Rainbow software was going to turn out a third game in the series. To be honest, I don't think Rainbow software turned out ANYTHING else on the TI... which is really too bad, because there was some talented programmers there. InfernalKeith
I figured there was a method to the madness and my relative inexperience is holding me back right now. I'm planning to devote a good bit of time to my quests this week. It's also got my wheels turning on a couple of my own long-shelved programming projects, which was another goal of mine. sparkdrummer
There are actually 3 releases in the "wizard" lineup - I think wizards dominium was the first, followed by lair then revenge. I've got all 3.
+adamantyr
Wizard's Dominion is from American software, not Rainbow. Also, as far as game quality goes, Wizard's Lair and Revenge blow Dominion out of the water.
sparkdrummer
Really? Wow, I could sworn they were by the same outfit. Sorry for the error.
+adamantyr
Oh no problem dude, we were making the same mistake back in the 80's too.
+Ksarul
I liked the silver foil labels Rainbow used on their disks too. . .and I think I may have one other program they did around here somewhere.
