Cambouis de l'Atari
Yup 7800 is totally the way to go. I understand your point, but imho you're missing the main pleasure of operating a true vintage, fake wooden object, right out of your golden memories
Amityville315
I guess I took a different path. Originally, I sought out a 5200 set up and found a guy on craiglist selling a "bunch of atari stuff" which included a 7800 and a 5200. I think I bought the entire lot he had for $120 or less (included a ton of games and controllers including the 5200 track ball!). After plugging in the 7800 and playing a few old school 2600 games on it, I tried some 7800 games and was impressed. If the goal is to have the faux wood console to take you back to your childhood, I get that. However, the 7800 offers all the 2600 games and more.
hizzy
I never played a 7800 game, but I am open to trying it out. I imagine it's a souped up 2600?
Nebulon
(Slightly) unrelated I never got why they called that model "Darth Vader", I get that it's all black, but many modern consoles are black, and no one calls them "Vader" Not only is it black, but if you look at it face-on, it has a triangular shape much like Vader's mask. Amityville315
7800 offers pretty decent arcade reproductions that feel like the real deal. Games like Galaga, Ms Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong Junior are excellent. My buddy was a big 2600 Ms Pac Man guy and once he played the 7800 version he couldnt go back. hizzy
It's true that people sometimes overvalue atari games on kijiji. That's where I found the 500.00 console. Many are asking north of 100.00 for a console with no games. I have my eye on what looks to be a light sixer with 21 games. With some luck, I should get that for less than 75.00. DarkCart
I found a lot of games on eBay for ~$10. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lot-of-8-Atari-2600-Video-Games-with-Boxes-/161892315367?hash=item25b188b0e7:g:uzkAAOSwcdBWTjm1 However, since that's an auction, you'd want to bid soon If you prefer "Buy it Now", here's something like the link above http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-7-Atari-2600-Game-Cartridges-Battlezone-Football-Pac-Man-Space-Invaders-/391329737161?hash=item5b1d11e9c9:g:814AAOSwgQ9V4gdt
hizzy
This thread is amazing! http://atariage.com/forums/topic/184296-slowcoders-guide-to-cleaning-up-your-2600/ I want to learn about fixing up consoles, too. That thread was real food for thought. Do many people here service their own consoles?
hizzy
Just as an aside: The guy who was trying to sell me a new atari in box just told me he'd drop his price from 500.00 to 350.

I countered with $20 (which was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but his copy was especially minty so I thought it's be OK)... he wasn't having it. Not a big deal, he's allowed to charge what he wants. About 6 weeks later, I get a message saying he'll take the $20. I thank him for the offer, but decline on account of having bought a copy for $15 literally an hour after he turned me down.

Cambouis de l'Atari
Canadian. I know our money isn't worth much. Is this a deal in US dollars? In USD, it's horribly expensive, here in CAD it's just... well... very expensive
hizzy
The 500.00 console guy just asked me what my best offer on the never used, still in OG box atari would be. What would you pay for a never used "vader"? Thanks for all of the advice! You've all been a great help!

jhd
I never played a 7800 game, but I am open to trying it out. Keep in mind that both the 5200 and the 7800 received only very limited distribution in Canada, and so your chances of finding one "in the wild" are extremely low. I have been haunting thrift shops since the early-1990s in several provinces, and I have yet to see either one! Sears store-brand consoles are cartridges are also more rare than in the United States, but they sometimes turn-up.
DarkCart
This is all I got: That actually looks kind of good. I don't know what the actual console looks like, but I'd pay ~$100 US dollars.
hizzy
I offered 150.00 can & he asked me what my "best price" is. I told him that it's not worth 500.00. I have a line on a nice console that might end up costing me 25 bucks. I think even 150 can dollars is a touch high. You guys are making me cheap! gilsaluki
2600s and 7800s are so cheap (right now, although Ebayers are slowly driving up everything) that I have them both hooked using a cable splitter/switch. Puts less stress on the harder-to-find 7800. I play all my 2600 carts on the 2600, save the 7800 for its carts.
