Macintosh Plus

Hi I have a Macintosh Plus with System 7.1 installed and Microsoft Soft Works 3. Can I use my Lantronix Modem

with MS works comms program I brought a serial cable to use with the mac plus. The comms icon is unable to open

at the moment will the comms program work with the Lantronix Device, has anyone got it to work.

Off topic here, but have you upgraded it to 4MB RAM? Handy for System 7.1, especially for caching and a RAM disk...

Should work as long as you have a terminal program and appropriate cabling

Yes it has 4 MB of ram in it. I did try it with my Lantronix the comms program in old ms works did not work it faild to open.

Im looking out for more Comms programs for the Plus to use.

Zterm

 

and I forget if I needed a null modem cable or not its been a while

Zterm is the one to use yes.

if it needs a null modem cable (aka crossover) and your running a 1:1 straight though cable (ie the RX and TX pins are not crossed over) orce vice versa it doesnt matter which terminal program you use as its talking into a deaf ear

 

check the documentation on the specific device

 

but yes get zterm, for the mac its the perfect basic but yet full featured terminal program you can get and runs on just about anything up to OSX and beyond

i have a serial port cable for the mac plus mini dim 8 to 25 pin i do have a null modem cable to shell i put that between the lantronix modem

and serial cable to the mac.

is there anything to setup up in the systems in system 7.1 for the modem port to work or shell i just put the mac away again

put a 486 in its place

nope there is nothing in 7.1 to setup a serial port, load coms and off you go

 

at this point I say check your cable, and try running it form a modern machine with RS232 serial to make sure the problem is not the device

You also might need to check the handshaking settings... the 8-pin mini DIN that they started using on the Mac Plus is a non-hardware handshaking serial port, so sometimes a non-hardware handshaking cable might be required for higher speeds. I seem to remember a buddy's girlfriend having an issue with that back in the day.

 

Can anyone confirm this? I haven't had to deal with that issue in over 20 years!

The Mac plus is put away again ill get it out when i get a copy of Zterm for it.
