Atari 8-Bit Collection For Sale

Tempest

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be easier to start a new topic as the old one has become muddled.

I've decided to sell off my entire Atari 8-bit collection. Everything is good shape except where noted. If there are multiple types of boxes (as with some of the Atari games) I've noted which one they are. Tapes and disks are untested as I no longer have a tape or disk drive to test them with but I'm fairly confident that everything should work. If you need a more detailed description of anything just ask. If the game is still on the list then it's still available.

Make me an offer for games or the whole collection.

At the moment I'm not looking for trades with the exception of:

Exidy Sorcerer games or hardware

Boxed Apple II/IIgs games

A super nice Tandy CoCo 3 setup (memory expansion, disk drive, etc.).

I'm using the usual CIB abbreviations to show what everything comes with. If the item is cartridge/tape/disk only there will be no code after it.

C= Cartridge/Cassette
D=Disk
I= Instructions
B=Box

Sorry everyone, I'm going to have to put splitting up the collection on hold for a bit due to some medical issues (my wife, not me). I just don't have the time to price everything out at the moment. The collection as a whole is still up for grabs though.

Very, very sorry to hear about the health issues. Wishing you and your wife the best.

Also wanted to say those early Atari boxes have some beautiful artwork on them. I still remember back when I was a kid and those monstrous boxes with great art always drew me in and then I was baffled every time by how small the cartridge was. Definitely not the era of environmentally-conscious packaging!

Thanks. She's on the mend so it shouldn't be much longer.

I always assumed it was for security as those 8-bit carts are small enough to shove in a pocket. But then again it could have been to make them look more professional since they were for the computer rather than a game system like the 2600.

Update: My wife is doing better, but some other life related stuff has come up. Hopefully I'll be able to get to pricing stuff out by the end of the month, but not promises. For the time being the BIN price is still valid though.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't forgotten about this. My wife is just about back to normal, so I've been doing some price research. I'm running into problems though since I can't find a good source for prices. Most of the time I either find loose games (boxes and manuals tend to add a bunch to the value) or BIN prices which don't represent the actual value (a $50 game selling for $5 on a BIN doesn't make it a $5 game or vice versa).

Other than ebay, what is a good place to get some price info? I want to be fair and not rip anyone off, but I also don't want to be ripped off myself. :)

First off, very nice collection. I just got an Atari XEGS a few months back, so I'm in the market for games like these. Archon, for example, is a game I've been looking for.

As for your question about pricing....it's tough, because most pricing guides are either outdated (like the Digital Press guides) or don't adequately cover the 8-bit Atari stuff. Ebay is still the best bet, but how about Pricecharting.com? If you haven't used it, it's a great site for estimating game prices, because it aggregates the sales history on Ebay and Amazon to come up with an estimated price. It's generally very accurate, except for rare games that don't pop up often enough to get an aggregate price. One other problem is that it focuses mostly on the NES and later video game systems, so it's coverage of older games is more limited (especially older computers). But it does cover some Atari 400/800 stuff, so worth checking out at least. And usually much faster than using ebay to come up with prices.

I'll check that out, but just glancing at it there are issues. Check out Mario Bros for example:

https://www.pricecharting.com/game/atari-400/mario-bros

We all know this is hard one to find. $51 loose sounds about right, but $7.50 complete? Sounds like there was a mismarked BIN or something. It's more like $140 complete.

Tempest - instead of dragging this out another year I would suggest pricing each object for what you'd be happy to let it go for. That will give a starting point to negotiate. Someone will snap it up for that price or after a week someone will offer less.

My $0.02

That was my plan, but I need to figure out a base price first. I don't know what my 'happy price' is quite honestly. I just know some games are rarer than others.

Yes, that one would fall into the exception... games that don't show up enough to get a true aggregate price. If you click to look at the individual sales, you can see that the game bringing it down is a 7800 version of Mario Bros that is missplaced with the computer version...it sold for $7.50. So you have to account for that and try to "manually" correct the price based on the other sales data available.

But one of the cool things about PriceCharting is it goes back much further than ebay. So while you can only see the past few months of sold items on ebay, you can see the final sale price for the last few years on PriceCharting. For a common game, going that far back is unnecessary, but it's great for super rare games that only pop up once every few months on ebay. To your point, though, the site has its flaws, but it's definitely a great resource to keep handy in the right spots. I like to use it at flea markets, yard sales, etc. too, because it's much faster than ebay for looking up a stack of games that I'm unfamiliar with.

Brother if I had both the money to buy it and the SPACE (which is even more difficult to come by) I'd take the lot in one swoop. Alas there's no room in the inn or in the manger. It's a beautiful collection though! BTW it was your post on FB that tipped me off to come read the thread. :D

Wow, fantastic collection. 15 year old me is going NUTS right now just looking back over all of this goodness. I have a pretty decent Atari 400/800 collection but am drooling at the thought of being able to have all of this at one time. But my guess is that the asking price will be well beyond what my wife thinks is a good deal. I also was directed here from Facebook.

Lack of space is one of the main reasons I'm selling it. I just don't have the room for it anymore and I'd rather use that space to set up more systems (my poor Coleco Adam is just sitting on the floor at the moment).

This is a great collection if you want to jump into 8-bit stuff. This will get you pretty close to a complete game cartridge collection with many boxes.

"Close to a complete game cartridge collection" meaning?

There are more than 452 production Atari 8-bit cartridges.

I think you list ~100-150.

Does that include utility and productivity carts? I was only talking about games. NTSC games.

I might be wrong but last I checked (and that was some time ago), I wasn't missing many game carts. Of course I've sold some since then and a few may have been discovered since then.

Here's the list I maintain, though there have been a couple more found since this version.

It includes all production cartridges, available for sale by a company.

It does not include the homebrews, distributor releases, and utility project carts.

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/210745-cartridge-list-for-the-atari-8-bit-computers-400800xlxe-computers/page-1

In the last 8 years many have come out, mostly due to the cartridge market bubble in 2009-2010.

For games, I put cart type into categories, some of those might not be correct but should be close.
