It can produce a broader range of frequencies, has built in sound envelope, selectable waveform, etc...The SN is smaller, easier to interface, is strictly square wave, and cheaper... which is why a lot of machines went with it.It sounds a bit more like the Pokey but the sound effects aren't as good.FWIW, high speed manipulation of registers on the SN can simulate some of the missing features, but it does require CPU intervention. 20ohm20 Posted August 24, 2016 Share Posted August 24, 2016 I used a Dell Dimension 2400 nearly identical to OP's picture in my MAME cabinet until about 3 years ago. Other than upgrading the RAM to 2GB, everything in it was as originally shipped by Dell.
