paul
Enterrainment Weekly's Top 100 Games 1. The Legend Of Zelda - A Link to the Past (SNES, 1991) 2. Doom (PC, 1993) 3. Tetris (PC, 1985) . . . 50. Pitfall! (Atari 2600, 1982) The only Atari 2600 game to be mentioned.
gulag picture radio
that's a common problem with lists like that. The people compiling them always favor stuff in their recent memories rather than being able to look at things with a real historical perspective. I mean look at IMDB and check out their top 100 films of all time - it names a lot of recent and near recent films that will easily be forgotten in ten years. Still, I guess it's nice to get any mention at all. Could have been a lot worse...
rolenta
I sent them a letter. They said the judging was based on replayability, pop-cultural importance, and impact. So why wasn't Pong on the list?
MegaManFan
This is the only good thing I think EW has ever done: http://www.ohhla.com/gfx/press/ew3.gif And I still only got a B+. Bollocks to them, I deserve an A!
tyranthraxus
Link to a Past #1??? If any Nintendo should be number one it should be Super Mario. However I won't get to uptight over this 'list'. Afterall this is Entertainment Weekly. They are only concerned about whats coming out this week. They don't really have much journalistic credibility let alone and credibility as a game magazine! I havn't seen the whole list but did any Atari arcade games make the list? Or Atari era arcade games from other companies? Like say Pac-man? Or is it just console/computer games? Pitfall is a worthy game for such a list but the 2600 era was more about arcade ports than original titles and I can't think of many that deserve to be on the list. Most of the top games of that time were made for arcades or 8-bit computers. John

They don't really have much journalistic credibility let alone and credibility as a game magazine! Supposingly G4 helped them with it. I havn't seen the whole list but did any Atari arcade games make the list? I saw Missile Command near the end of the list. That's the only one I remember off the top of my head. Cybergoth
Hi there! 1. The Legend Of Zelda - A Link to the Past (SNES, 1991)2. Doom (PC, 1993) 3. Tetris (PC, 1985) Hm... those never worked for me Only a month ago I played "Link to the Past" start to finish (again!) on the GBA, and again I didn't think it was that good. And I never understood the Doom craze either. No one would seriously rate Doom higher than Duke Nukem 3D or Half Life or Unreal or Quake 2 or Jedi Night or any other FPS being released after it. The genre evolved sooo much. And yes, I had a gameboy equipped with Tetris on the toilet for several years, but... Well... everyone has his own top 100 I guess Greetings, Manuel

tyranthraxus
Well that list isn't so bad then with all those arcade games mentioned. Frogger is the only one on the list that I don't think should be there. While I love Frogger more than several of the other arcade games on the list I don't think it really was all that influential or ground breaking in terms of gameplay/graphics in comparison. sku_u
No Pac-Man, Space Invaders, or Pong! Any top 100 videogame list missing these titles is highly suspect. Pac-Man and Pong not only should be there, they should be at the top of the list. Space Invaders started an unsurpassed videogame craze and popularized videogames. I'm going to start a thread in the Classic Gaming forum asking fellow members to help compile a top 100 of all time.
TaoNakamora
I agree Pong,Space Invaders, and Pac-man should be at the top of the list but I also think that Defender should be in the 70s or 80s.....it wasnt the first.....but surely one of the top 100!

Jess Ragan
Entertainment Weekly is legendarily ignorant about the video game industry. Their articles are no longer downright insulting, which is a step in the right direction, but they still leave something to be desired. You know, like some knowledge of this industry. Godzilla
I wonder if frogger was included because of its cultural signifigance due to being in a seinfeld episode, since TV is something EW can understand? :-)

MegaManFan
BTW if anybody's interested they're supposed to have an EW special on the top 100 on G4 TV sometime this week. Since I already know Atari got the shaft though, I probably won't watch.
Godzilla
a pizza joint is closing, and jason alexander tried to save their frogger arcade cab by getting it across a busy highway, complete with overhead view and frogger arcade sounds.
Goochman
My take having been around since the combat days: Games that had most impact on me: *Space Invaders Wizard of Wor Venture Defender Gyruss *Pac Man *Ms Pac Man Donkey Kong Zaxxon Pole Position Xevious Dragons Lair Space Harrier with moving seat ---------------- * Games I sucked at I then went more on the computer front and the arcade stuff starting going to the fighting genere which sucked but I would add that DOOM was awesome providing first person shooting and acceptable modem play. DOOM had a great impact on current gaming trends and should be at the top of any list. You could possibly swap Quake with Doom due to the enhancements it brought, but network play at work with Doom was hard to believe from my Atari 800 upbringing
