copper20
Anyone know if there's any cheap repair services around for maybe 10$ + shipping? I'm having a lot of trouble with watching tv shows on DVD on my PS2, and I don't want to get a DVD player since I'll have to buy another power strip and have to use a component video switch. Basically what happens is that during a DVD movie, it plays fine for a bit, then it starts freezing, then afterwards it says "Unable to read disc." on the screen. My model is an SCPH-30001R. Quick rant here: Why can't Sony LEARN to make reliable products? I tried a VCR a month or two ago that was from 1996 and it snapped a tape, and beforehand I tried one from 2000 by Sony and it wouldn't eject well 6 years ago. Do they not even bother to test their equipment? Sega Saturns rarely break down, and they use CDs! Why? icemanxp300
You need a new laser. This is a known issue on ps2 systems and why you should NOT watch DVD's on them. If you notice blue backed disc will no longer play either. Your laser has been abused and is now in need of replacement. I suggest you buy a dvd player for $30 and save your gaming systems for games.
copper20
Good to know - I'll grab a DVD player from Goodwill that works.

That PS2 laser eye is struggling to track during the freezes shortening its life. Not a big deal adding a powerstrip and switch box; a dedicated player has so much better control for movie viewing anyways. iesposta
But I just bought DVD Region X and now I can watch DVD's on the PS2 using RGB out to Framemeister XMini upscaler and it is the best picture quality I've ever seen from a DVD. Note on cleaning a DVD laser. There is a lens under the top lens. Dust gets on that bottom lens. If you can clean that second lens without breaking the thin wires you can extend its use. Of course if the laser has failed, no cleaning will help.

Some players can be made Region Free just by accessing a hidden Menu with the remote. Really, save the wear of the game Console for just the games, a decent dedicated Player will definitely give a better picture and control options. Nestea341
Same issue happened to me. My PS2 can never play DVD movies even though they say it can. From then on, I just treat my PS2 as gaming console only. I would like to have it be able to play DVD movies so I can use my PS2 to watch some of the DVD movies. Oh well, I guess not everything goes in your way sometimes. ----------------------------------- http://www.jenreviews.com/best-air-purifier/
