+helocast
After reading at oldcomputers.net, it still bugs me that console serial numbers are not representative of total number reportedly manufactured. Yeah, probably not important in the grand scheme of things ... I'm just super curious: Is/Was there any rhyme or reason to this? ..7,206,248 4A Black/Chrome, produced March 6-12, 1983 ..8,142,304 4A Black/Chrome, produced March 6-12, 1983 53.154,804 4A Beige, produced September 18-24, 1983 53,179,343 QI Beige non-lockout, produced October 9-15, 1983 51,293,834 QI Beige non-lockout, produced December 4-10, 1983
+Ksarul
Up to about the first 100,000 sold, the serial numbers were meaningful as stamped. After that, all kinds of crazy things happened that probably had no meaning to anyone outside of the production supervisor's office. It could have been anything from PCB batch numbers at the beginning of the serial number to minor board revision numbers. So far as I have seen, no data has ever come to light to explain this little oddity.
