Starman
Hi all, This is something I've been meaning to look up for a while - info on the 800XL parallel port. Neither here nor a Google search brings up much. Has anyone ever tried to tackle this thing? Is it even worth it?
TangentAudio
The Parallel Bus Interface (PBI) port? Here you go. I combined this into a single PDF from several issues of ANTIC Magazine. I removed ads where I could just for clarity. There's lots of other info out there, too. I'm just starting up a PBI project myself. Starman
Thanks for the info. I saw mentions of the Antic articles on a Google groups page, but later in the thread someone said it wasn't real info about it, just the 1090 so I ignored it. I guess the person was wrong. Thanks! TangentAudio
The article is a little dated in terms of technologies (most people implement the logic on CPLDs or FPGAs nowadays instead of a pile of discrete 74HC series logic gates), but the overall system description and example are worth understanding. The article describes how to make an extremely simple UART device, including a hardware design, and a very simple software driver in 6502 assembler. If you have any computer engineering background at all it's pretty straightforward. Apparently the article was written by the former project lead of the ill-fated 1450XLD project. When I started developing PBI firmware, I found these articles useful: http://www.oocities.org/dr_seppel/pbi1_eng.htm http://www.oocities.org/dr_seppel/pbi2_eng.htm http://www.oocities.org/dr_seppel/pbi3_eng.htm

I also just took those 3 articles you linked and reformatted them and made them into a single PDF for future reference. Thanks for the links, I had not seen those articles before!
