jak327
Is there anybody out their interested in building a self centering controller for the atari 5200? Is it possible to use existing controllers of start from scratch.
CZroe
I don't think it would help things as much as people assume. A big part of the issue is programming and how the game responds to it drifting in other axes while returning, manually or otherwise. Most of the games had play control written for a completely different platform with digital joysticks(Atari 8-bit home computers) and pretty much just added a bit of code to translate your stick position to one of four digital directions. This allows contradictory inputs. For example, switching from left to right will also be SOME degree either up or down. If, along the way between left and right, you cross between up and down, does the game register that as a digital up or down press? Some do, some don't. It depends on how they were coded. Self-centering doesn't solve this.
King_Salamon
I have a 'self-centering' joystick... it's available for sale in the marketplace. It was a trak ball controller that was modified to use a hand grip stick. It centers using springs. I don't have a need for it as I have a redemption for digital 2600 controls and rebuilt controllers for analog games. Not sure who made this but it works.
