Granted, that's pretty much what Atari Inc's/GCC's plan was anyway.

Granted, that's pretty much what Atari Inc's/GCC's plan was anyway. That was an 8bitdomain project years ago, I remember it being kind of a big deal and then all of a sudden nothing came of it. In fact here's a thread touching on that from nearly 10 years ago: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/120897-who-here-in-atari-age-has-received-the-7800-adapter-from-8bit-domain
scotty
Here is a picture of Steve Golson's prototype from ReplayFX 2016. Also, I had him sign my 2 Atari 7800's and Ms. Pac-Man marquee.
Lynxpro
I still contend Atari Inc should've made a ColecoVision adapter for the 5200. That would've stolen a lot of Coleco's thunder had it been released in 1983.
onemoretime
Anyone ever try using a 2600 adapter in it, with the coleco adapter in it? Shock value for sure.
Dutchman2000
I still contend Atari Inc should've made a ColecoVision adapter for the 5200. That would've stolen a lot of Coleco's thunder had it been released in 1983. They were considering doing just that, I have recently unearthed documents that show that Atari was in discussions to create 3 types of systems. The first one being a colecovision adapter for the 5200 similar to the 2600 one. The second being a clone colecovision system. The third being a hybrid having both the 5200 and colecovision chips and processors.

Was anybody keeping track of the books to make sure that Atari could afford all these projects ?
onemoretime
I had one of these offered to be a few months ago ( the knockoff ones that a few where made), but with my mods, it wouldn t work in my 5200 anyhow.
Lynxpro
Plus the 7800 R&D and the Famicom deal with Nintendo. Was anybody keeping track of the books to make sure that Atari could afford all these projects ? Well, the 7800 project was GCC's doing. They coaxed Warner into it and Warner forced Atari's hands. Dutchman's stuff was all in-house Atari Inc stuff. They seriously should've brought out the ColecoVision adapter. That would've stolen so much of that console's thunder. Just like with the Colecovision's 2600 Adapter, it wouldn't have sold many adapters but it would've swayed a bunch of consumers to buy the 5200 with the thought that if they really wanted a few ColecoVision titles, they could buy the Adapter at a later date. As long as a compatible ColecoVision BIOS was made in a clean-room environment, there wouldn't have been anything Coleco could have done to stop Atari. Even if they created a new BIOS to try to stop Atari, Atari could've made a new compatible one, produced it on a new batch of chips, and then offered the update for charge - or for free - to owners of the Adapter through the Atari Service Center network. And we're not even talking about what Jerry Jessop and Tod Frye cooked up in response to GCC as a means of getting Warner convinced Atari itself could produce a worthy 5200 successor... There's a big difference between doing the analysis and exploring business deals, building business cases and actually bringing all these things to market.
