New Missile Command

Hi all,

I was just having a marathon Missile Command session on my 7800 using a CX22 Trak-Ball, and also on MAME for the original arcade coin-op experience on my PC. Missile Command was definitely one of my all-time favorites. Anyway, my question is, has anyone considered creating a new version of Missile Command for the 7800? I was thinking that you could have two missile bases, one for each of the buttons that the 7800 supports, and could add a more authentic experience like the original coin-op, with alien ships, incoming missiles that split apart, etc. I was thinking that the more advanced capabilities of the 7800 would provide the needed horsepower to enable these new features. Also, the other arcade conversions for the 7800 are very good, but for some reason Missile Command was overlooked.

If someone were to code something new for the 7800, I think this would be a very worthwhile project.

Let me know what you think,

Jim

Nice idea. Sounds similar to the Atari 8-bit version (is the 5200 version the same?), but addition of the second missile base would be great.

The 2600 version is always fun on its own, of course, but after playing the arcade game or the 8-bit version I do kinda miss the multiple bases, bombers, satellites, splitting missiles, and other little touches that added to the complexity of the original.

If anyone ever does consider an update of Missile Command for the 7800, I hope they consider making it light-gun compatible.

That would be ... weird. Not necessarily bad, mind you. Just weird.

I don't see how a light-gun would help much, but ok.

Can you explain?

Well -- when you think about this, why not? "Missile Command" always was a target-shoot exercise -- and this sort of fits in with the theme -- even though, without rather precise calibration, I fear that the targets would be extremely difficult to hit. I bet it'd be fun to play, though!

I'd also like to see a light-gun version of "Centipede" on the 7800, for that matter. :)

If it were light gun based, it would be alot like Meltdown. You wouldn't actually have to hit the targets exactly. You'd have an explosion where the beam from the gun hits. You just wouldn't have the lines streaming out from your bases. The bases could represent the amount of ammo you have and it'd work out. It's not a new concept. I've wondered why this idea hadn't been implemented myself.

Instead of bothering with a Missile Command "update" for the 7800, you should just go pick up an Atari Jaguar and a copy of Missile Command 3D.

Running the original coin-op Missile Command via MAME is the best IMO, because that's what I started with. I still enjoy the 2600 version, and would like to see a 7800 version just to see what could be done with it.
