Thank you, @CaptainBreakout  Well, I have never played this game.  Here is the manual.  Can you (or anybody here who is familiar with this game) talk about whether or not they think the battles with the Killer would be considered boss battles?

Boss Battle - Criteria:

A) The boss(es) should be "Bigger 'n' Badder" than ordinary enemies.

B) The boss battle(s) must be life or death.  Either you die or the boss dies.  One of you dies.

C) You must defeat the boss to advance further in the game.

It probably does not qualify... Since it's a little like the situation with Yars Revenge and the Qotile. Running from Mike Myers in Halloween is pretty much the entire game. There are some short periods of time when he's not on the screen, but he's never that far away.

It funny when you compare Atari's Halloween to something like Friday the 13th on the NES.  I'm pretty sure it's an easy win to say that Jason is a boss in that game, and he appears a lot, but in that game there's more stuff to do to break up the boss fights.

Halloween has Mike in it so much (he's the main element of the game, besides saving kids), saying he's a boss fight would be a little like saying every main adversary in a game like Tag Team Wrestling or (shudder) your opponent in Froggo's Karate are also a boss fights, and they are clearly not.

Anyways, thought it was worth mentioning here, but unless we consider the whole game a boss fight, I don't actually think it qualifies to be honest.

Boss Battle - Criteria

A) The boss(es) should be "Bigger 'n' Badder" than ordinary enemies.

B) The boss battle(s) must be life or death for both of you.  Either you die or the boss dies.  One of you dies.

C) You must defeat the boss to advance further in the game.

IMO Not a boss fight

  • Beamrider – The mothership cannot kill you. And you needn't kill the mothership to advance further in the game.

  • Front Line (fort) - the fort is not a boss. It's a building. Also, in front of the fort, you fight ordinary enemy soldiers. There is not a Bigger 'n' Badder boss there that you must defeat to enter the fort.

  • Jungle Hunt (cannibals) - A boss fight should be a fight to the death. You hop over the cannibals, but that doesn't kill them. Not a boss fight IMO.

  • Star Wars The Arcade Game - IMO the "Trench" is a location, not a boss.

  • Ghostbusters (Marshmallow Man) - IMO no, because there is no fight and it won't kill you and you can advance without defeating it.

  • Off the Wall (dragon) - I'm sure it's difficult to hit the dragon six times and destroy it, but you also could avoid the dragon and simply knock all the bricks out of the wall and advance anyway. IMO not a boss fight.

  • Oysterion (Oystron) (homebrew) You lose bonus points if you let the Oystron get away.

Not Sure

  • Dragonstomper - The Dragon in the Dragon Cave? Needs to be verified

  • Halloween - ???

  • Laser Gates (Failsafe Detonators?) I'm sure it's difficult to destroy the Failsafe Detonators at the end of each level, but are those really boss fights?

  • Radar Lock (maybe the Super Bombers?) - the super bombers are tough, yes, but are they bosses? Or just tough enemies?

  • Spy Hunter (helicopter) - Yes, the helicopter is tough, but is it a boss fight?

  • Star Wars ROTJ Death Star Battle - the Death Star must be blown up, yes, but is that a boss fight?

  • Subterranea (Hexuplex?) - Yes, the Hexuplex is the bad guy sending all the Aerobots at you, but is there really a boss fight between you and the Hexuplex?

Hello, @CaptainBreakout.  Thanks for that insight into the game.  I think it was very helpful.

"Running from Mike Myers in Halloween is pretty much the entire game."  If you can run away then according to our criteria, it wasn't a boss fight.

Also, can't you stab Mike Myers with the knife?  (I was reading the instruction manual.)  If you just wound him and he leaves but comes back later, then it wasn't mortal combat and therefore according to our criteria, not a boss fight.

Actually, now that I see your criteria, our mini bosses are mostly not story-blocking (criterion "C") but the four final bosses and a few mini bosses are. (the Grue in the caves by Mt Peshon, for example.) They're all life-or-death though (RUN AWAY is blocked) and are tougher than the non-boss version of the same creature (if there is such a thing). So yeah 😅

Thanks for adding us!

The Black Knight?

image.png.1ab844b2135ff6aca6a20feeda5c9970.png

Does it meet our criteria?

Boss Battle - Criteria
A) The boss(es) should be "Bigger 'n' Badder" than ordinary enemies.
B) The boss battle(s) must be life or death for both of you.  Either you die or the boss dies.  One of you dies.
C) You must defeat the boss to advance further in the game.

I regret getting involved in this, but yes, yes, yes.

  • Halloween – The fighting between you and Mike Myers is not mortal combat.  Also, either party can run away to return and fight later.
  • Zarkstars I: A Space Saga – Link For the same reason that the fort in Commando is not a boss, the cavern in the video is not a boss.  There is not one 'Bigger 'n' Badder' enemy in the video that you can call a boss.

Not Sure

  • Dragonstomper - The Dragon in the Dragon Cave? Needs to be verified

@ultima was kind enough to respond to a PM about the boss fights in his 2018 adventure-type homebrew, Sword of Surtr, and he assures me that, yes, several of the bosses in the game do meet all 3 of our criteria.  So...

Sword of Surtr added!

@batari Mr. Quimby, would you have a moment to say a word or two about the bosses in your game, Gingerbread Man?

Sure. The game is very loosely based on some of the old fairy tales of the same name, particularly the one where the gingerbread man escapes the oven, then the house, then heads into the forest, and encounters one animal after the next.

There are four levels and 5 screens, let's call them 1-1 to 4-5. Boss screens are 1-5, 2-5, 3-5 and 4-5.

Level 1-5: The cat

image.png.c7514d078e4eddbbc2a9b87db1777330.png

None of the bosses are easy to defeat, but the cat is the slowest and easiest to avoid of them all.

Level 2-5: The bulldog:

image.png.286f0b836848b61c8220b351791ca530.png

Faster and less predictable, but bigger. Easier to hit, but harder to avoid.

Level 3-5: The pig:

image.png.846d2195cb51f9dd659c90d5aa7495c1.png

Taller, faster, and more deliberate than the bulldog, the pig is a formidable enemy.

Level 4-5: The swimming fox

In most versions of the story, a wily fox asks the gingerbread man by offering to let it climb upon its back and swim to safety, but it's trick, so don't do it!

image.png.f5c5867fd6b3c384e25564bc5a514d81.png

The screen is flooded with water while the fox swims on the surface. As the water fills the screen more and more, there is less room for action on the screen. As a starchy confection, you can't really swim. You can only bob a little, though you can duck underwater briefly to avoid enemies.

Defeat the final boss and you beat the game!

To my knowledge, nobody has beaten the game yet. I've only managed to defeat the boss one time in testing, and I wasn't playing through, so it doesn't count. I have never heard of anyone doing it.

Beating the game:

I admit that the game is really hard. Some say it's too hard. But we can at least all agree that it's a huge challenge.

One thing that helps is that continues are allowed until level 3-4. After that you have only your remaining lives to beat the game. However, if you somehow make it to level 4-5, continues get re-enabled so you can have as many chances to beat the swimming fox as you want.

If you want a bit of a boost at beating the game, there are three secret warp screens, which are situated "above" levels 1-1, 2-1, and 3-1. Call these 1-W, 2-W and 3-W. If you can jump high enough, you can get to the warp screen. There is no warp screen above 4-1.

To jump high enough,

Spoiler

Make a leap of faith to the far upper left of the screen, and duck when you hit the wall. You will then be standing on the "magic dot" that you can very subtly see when ducking. So stay ducking, or the dot will disappear and you will fall! Now you can jump up to the warp screen.

image.thumb.png.54b8727fa35a808e06808203814b82ab.pngimage.png.3b932db8d75b1473bc89ff8b4df78852.png

The warp screen:

image.thumb.png.13ba4f466bec28376030abf1cc07ba82.png

Level 1-W will take you to 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 or 1-5 by jumping on the corresponding number. Same with 2-W and 3-W to warp to higher screens in those levels.

But to really make progress in the game, fall into the pit on the left side of the screen. You won't lose a life - instead you will warp to 2-1.

Likewise, falling in the pit on 2-W can take you to 3-1, and the pit on 3-W can take you to 4-1, then play through screens 4-2 to 4-5. There is no 4-W, so don't try to reach that screen from 4-1, you will fall when trying the jump.

These warps are the quickest and easiest way to progress toward 4-5 and beat the game.

The game does also have a children's mode, but continues are disabled sooner so this may not be easier.

I have never heard about anyone beating the game before, but maybe with this post, someone will.

  • Front Line (fort) - the fort is not a boss. It's a building. Also, in front of the fort, you fight ordinary enemy soldiers. There is not a Bigger 'n' Badder boss there that you must defeat to enter the fort.
  • Halloween – The fighting between you and Mike Myers is not mortal combat. Also, either party can run away to return and fight later.

Dragonstomper definitely needs to be solidified on the boss list.  Just look at this screenshot:

The player is the small dot so by comparison that boss is huge and takes more hits than any other enemy, with possibly the exception of the bridge guard.  You don’t have to kill him to win the game as you just need to maneuver around him to touch the amulet at the top.  But if the unlock spell doesn’t work to open the gate, you would have no choice but to defeat him.

However, Escape from the Mindmaster should be removed from the boss list altogether.  The 5 tests are just that and they only contribute to the player’s final score.  But they are not necessary for completing the game.

Boss Fights - Criteria

A) Bosses should be "Bigger 'n' Badder" than ordinary enemies.

B) Boss fights must be mortal combat. Either you die or the boss dies. One of you dies.

C) You cannot avoid or escape from a boss fight.

D) You must defeat the boss to advance further in the game.

Not a boss fight

  • Beamrider – The mothership cannot kill you. And you needn't kill the mothership to advance further in the game.
  • Escape from the Mind Master  (Mind Master - Five Tests) – One could argue that the tests are like "mental combat." Even so, it doesn't meet our criteria because the five tests are not necessary to win the game. They only give you a higher score.
  • Front Line (fort) - the fort is not a boss. It's a building. Also, in front of the fort, you fight ordinary enemy soldiers. There is not a Bigger 'n' Badder boss there that you must defeat to enter the fort.
  • Goblin Sword – I PM'd the creator, satyrsfaction, and he said the final battle with the Evil Sorcerer at the end of the 4th level doesn't meet our criteria because "technically you could flee from him..."
  • Halloween – The fighting between you and Mike Myers is not mortal combat. Also, either party can run away to return and fight later.
  • Zarkstars I: A Space Saga – Link For the same reason that the fort in Commando is not a boss, the cavern in the video is not a boss. There is not one 'Bigger 'n' Badder' enemy in the video that you can call a boss.
  • ZPH: The Game – Reading the game manual, I don't think "Boss Wave (Pixel Cat)" meets all of the criteria of our definition of a boss battle. James captures Pixel Cat 6 times, so, obviously, it isn't mortal combat. (James does not kill Pixel Cat.) And Pixel Cat seeks to evade capture by James, so, similarly, it is not mortal combat. (Pixel Cat does not kill James.)

In the Hot Seat

  • Dragonstomper - The Dragon in the Dragon Cave meets all of our criteria – almost. The fact is, the fight can be avoided – sometimes. If the unlock spell works, you can walk past the dragon and get the amulet. But if not, it's a fight to the death. So, should we include Dragonstomper on our list of games with boss fights?

Not Sure

  • Laser Gates (Failsafe Detonators?) I'm sure it's difficult to destroy the Failsafe Detonators at the end of each level, but are those really boss fights?
  • Knight Guy in Castle Days – has 3 bosses, need to verify they meet all of our criteria.
