problem with the system

I just bought an old atari 5200 game system with a bunch of games and I don't know what is the problem with it but only about half of the games work with this joystick that i have with it. The games I have that won't works are games that i can move but i can't fire like space invaders and missle command. I know the fire button works because I have some games that require the fire button and they work perfectly. Some of the games i have like qbert and frogger will not move. I also have pole position which will also not speed up or go forward. Like i said, I know the joystick works but i can't get some of the games to work with it. Is there another joystick I need for those games? The joystick also has a number pad on it and i can't figure out how to use it. I am wondering if the number pad has something to do with making these games work. If you can please give me some imput on how to make the games work. I would appreciate it. Thanks,
