Zen?

I just played 4 hours of Super Breakout (game variation #7) and didn't even realize what I was doing.... it's one of those games you can play with a podcast or a record playing in the background and you can zone out of the real world for a while.

I love these kinds of games.... where you can zone out while playing them and they become just a texture on your canvas while you let your brain run free. A game like GORF is not a zen-type game.... nor is Dragonfire--since they require too much direct attention to play properly.

What kind of zen games do you guys like?

on the 2600, i'm not too sure- most of the games i play require a large amount of concentration on my part, lol.

if you go up to modern pc/console, i can zone out for an hour easy on Diablo 3 killing stuff. it's even the same stuff i've killed a billion times before but still gratifying. i'm not even playing to gear anymore, just kill stuff lol

Enduro, River Raid and Beamrider.

Great 'Zoning Out' games.

This is a big part of why I like classic-style games.

Old zen zoners I have enjoyed:

Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom

Tempest 2000

Jungle Hunt

Berzerk

Gravitar (in easy/practice mode)

Asteroids on VCS

Space Giraffe

Gridrunner

New games with the same effect on my head:

Alto's Adventure/Odyssey

Whale Trail

Planet Quest

Dashy Crashy

Pac-Man 256

Crossy Road

Tiny Wings

Great suggestions! Enduro is definitely on my list, as is B-B variation 1 Asteroids.

I need to get Beam Rider...

Another one I love is Survival Run. As long as you can memorize the hall patterns, you won't even have to look at the map. A fun one, for sure.

I agree that 2600 Asteroids is a good choice. On the default variation, it's challenging enough to be fun, but not so challenging to demand your full concentration. If you play on Difficulty A, which enables UFOs and satellites, you can earn enough points to roll the score in about 30 minutes. Breakout or Super Breakout are other good choices, again because the gameplay is simple and the difficulty is low.

Another good game for "zoning out" that I've come to appreciate more recently is Miniature Golf. If I'm in the mood to absentmindedly tinker with a game, I like to experiment with starting positions that will allow me to get the ball into the cup in one or two strokes. I've found pretty reliable positions for the first few holes.

Here's a short video of me rolling the score on Asteroids three times with my son.

We eventually quit somewhere between 300k-400k...
