DaveJustDave
What are my options? I have a spare HD or CF adapter i can probably swap in, but I don't have any way of setting up the HD.. (I'm assuming i need something to partition/setup the drive?) or is everything in TOS ROM, and I plug in the drive and everything will just magically work? ParanoidLittleMan
HD is dead - go on with Compact Flash. That was in both meanings - your case, and generally. Yes, you assuming it right. Need special SW for setup the drive/CF card - partitioning and autoboot driver install. In TOS ROM is not much hard disk related. http://atari.8bitchip.info/pphdr.php With that SW you even don't need floppy to perform setup of CF card. With hard disk - can do it with floppy. And important thing: get Sandisk card. Well, if your spare HD is very old, I would not waste time and risk data. No, they don't pay me to advertise them - that's most secure choice. Other brands can have reliability problems, especially with write. Falcon's IDE port is really old design, so no wonder that problems with new medias can occur.
AtariGeezer
After my Falcon sat for years without powering up, mine was dead too. But after repeated power up / power down attempts, my HD came back up and was able to back it up...
