adam1977
I've just picked up my first Atari 2600, it came with two CX40 joysticks, paddles and two games, Combat and Super Breakout, all for £20. Only a couple of things wrong with it, one is the game select toggle switch has been replaced by a wood screw and the other we've only just noticed and that is after playing for a time, the screen goes to black and white, any ideas? All in all i'm very pleased with it and the kids absolutely love it
Keatah
Gotta love those redneck repairs. Kinda like using a padlock on your car door.
masschamber
something is probably wrong with the black/white switch as well, do you have any newer games that aren't effected by the black white switch?
pacman000
Congratulations! What games do you have? Do you want recommendations?
adam1977
Congratulations! What games do you have? Do you want recommendations? Many thanks, I have Super Breakout and Combat (which the kids really love) and i've just ordered Outlaw. Any recommendations would be really appreciated something is probably wrong with the black/white switch as well, do you have any newer games that aren't effected by the black white switch? I only have the two games, but i've just ordered Outlaw off eBay, I used to play that with a friend when I was a kid. I've just played the 2600 again and it's black and white all the time, I wonder if the switches need a clean? Gotta love those redneck repairs. Kinda like using a padlock on your car door. They are certainly ingenious aren't they Do you know if replacements are easy to come by?
Keatah
You can try BEST Electronics: http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/index.html ..and see what they have. I've not actually ordered anything from them personally, but others say they're good. If not they may advise you where to get them. You can try ebay, for the parts alone, or get another unit and cannibalize it for what you need. OR try and find a modern-day equivalent. There are people here that fix these things seemingly-daily, so they can advise you better.

adam1977
Thought i'd update this thread from last year, as i've managed to repair the damaged switch myself using a round aluminium bar. I took the switch out of the console, filed the plastic flat where the old woodscrew went in then drilled it to around 5mm deep. I then ordered a short length (6") of aluminium bar of the correct diameter, cut the desired length and inserted it into my mains drill, which was mounted on my Workmate. I used this setup as a makeshift lathe and managed to trim down the last 5mm or so to about 2mm in diameter, using a combination of files and sandpaper. Finally I mixed up some JB Weld and stuck the new lever into the switch, here's the finished article: I'm really pleased with it and it should be good for another 40 years I reckon
Isaiah Austin
You did a really good job repairing it! It looks a lot better without the screw as a switch! Did you get the black/white switch fixed as well? Edited August 24, 2019 by Isaiah Austin
